Does anyone know how common dysplasia is with Crohns? I somehow read about it last year and asked my Dr about it and she went on to say if they found that they would remove your entire colon. Terrifying and with my annual chromoendoscopy coming up, I get even more nervous. I've had Crohns for about 9-10 years now. Only in my colon. Last year, I just had one small section, about 5 inches, that wasn't healed and has always been my problem area. Hoping for a good report this year as well, but I can't help think about that dysplasia. I've tried reading up on it but it seems like I can't find any solid info. I currently take 100 mg of mercaptopurine daily and get remicade every 6 weeks.

Sorry no one has answered your post. I've never heard of dysplasia, so maybe it isn't that common. You can probably google it. Good luck with your upcoming test.

Thank you for the link. I hadn't really heard of dysplasia either, until I was researching on my own. My doctor moved and he had always told me that the chromoendoscopies(with the blue dye) were great bc they magnified everything and we could get anything out before it turned bad. I have this annually. My new doctor says if you have dysplasia they will remove your colon and you get a bag. Seemed pretty blunt. So that always worries me when I have my scopes. I've had the disease around 9 years and it's only in my colon. As of last year, everything was healed except for a small structure that was still inflamed so they increased my mercaptopurine to 100 mg in hopes of helping that approximately 5" section. It hasn't cooperated very well. I'm praying everything else, at least, is still healed. I just really work myself up now about the dysplasia. The Dr did say the risk is low.....but still scary. Seems like I always think about the worst case scenario.

I know it's hard not to worry sometimes. But the way I look at it, is that I already have a real problem that is hard enough, so I don't need to be focusing on the "what ifs." Good luck with your test, and let us know how it goes.

I assume your GI is speaking of the precancerous condition. I think IBDers are at a slightly higher risk than the rest for colon cancer, but I believe it's still very low.

You would probably have to look into colon cancer information as to recommendations, surgically speaking, for dysplasia of the colon. Even if you were to have dysplasia, you would still want to have other tests done to rule out false positives. And of course a second and third opinion before having your colon removed for a precancerous condition. I would probably go for a fourth under those conditions.

Doctors can vary on their recommendations. I've had one tell me in no uncertain terms that I had to have a surgery for something when my second opinion dr. felt it was more appropriate to wait and see. That's why it's good to listen to more than one expert and do your research.

Hi everyone. I had my chromoendoscopy (with blue dye) on July 8th. That one stubborn section that was about 5" long and was a structure...well the structure is gone!! That area is now 50% healed as well!! I was not expecting that news, but it's great. The increase in mercaptopurine has done wonders this past year. Of course I asked was there any dysplasia and she said she didn't see anything but we have to wait for biopsies to be 100% sure. I'm a little nervous but I would think with su h healing it should be ok. But the worry wart in me says different. All the rest of my colon remains healed as well.
