I have surgery on broken foot scheduled and with crohns i have had bad expierences with a pain meds stopping my bowels after surgery in the past. The pain from not being able to pass a bm was worse then the post op. Anyone have advice on pain meds that you had luck with that do not impact the ability to have bowel movements. Running to thr bathroom on crutches is better than not going at all.

Talk to your Gastroenterologist about your situation. Possibly a regimen of Miralax could keep your bowels moving while on pain meds. It is a powder you dissolve in liquids. It will work in any kind of beverage.

I agree with the above. Also, stool softeners and lots of water should help too. I don't know about your surgery, but you may not need them too long, just a few days. Good luck!

I have had the same problem after surgeries, and like twingir812 suggested, taking Miralax helped.

But it's important to know that miralax can take a couple of days or even a few days to kick in. So you might want to start taking miralax three or four days before the surgery, and continue it for a few days after.

It's better if you talk to your doctor and ask for a prescription. Response to medicine usually vary to every person and you have to undergo tests before you could get the right medicine prescription.

No one remembers what was prescribed after my last surgery that worked so well. The dr's that treated me didn't have the records, the prescriptions are in the hospital records that won't arrive in time. The miralax route was tried when I took the pain meds that caused so many issues. I am talking with dr's just wanted input on what worked good for anyone else.

Senna works really well to induce bowel contractions and move stool along. It's perfectly safe to use in the short term. Talk to your DRs about that. You should probably have a stool softener as well.
