I found this article interesting. I had to laugh when they cautioned at the end to not just go off your PPI because of it.

Quite weird. I can't imagine myself w/o a PPI. I take a double dose so does this mean I'm at a higher risk? They mentioned that the results are inconclusive and they need to be repeated on a larger scale and w H2 blockers as well. Hope these results are not correct.
I remember 17 years ago when I first got GERD, I was put on Prepulside (cizapride) and after taking it for a year and while I was asking for a refill, I learnt it caused heart attacks and thus it was banned.

The study shows an association - a correlation - between use of PPIs and increased risk of heart attacks, but it does NOT show that use of PPIs *cause* heart attacks or even increases the risk of heart attacks.
It could be that there are confounders involved. For example, it might be that people who use PPIs tend to be heavier and that is what leads to the heart attacks. Or people who use PPIs might think they have acid reflux when it's actually angina. There are countless possible explanations for the correlation.
Even if it does turn out that PPIs actually ARE the causative agent for increased risk of heart attacks, the actual risk increase is small.

I stopped PPI's after reading the PubMed study that said PPI'S combined with certain antibiotics ( cipro being one) increased the chances of c-diff. I happened to be on day 5 of cipro when I got c-diff and was also taking a PPI.

Before my IBD diagnosis I thought my severe stomach pain was from ulcers. So I took Deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) about
20 minutes before meals and before bedtime. It was very effective for my stomach pain.
And I noticed that it also relieved my GERD.
