cancer risk lymphoma and colon with crohns?

Does anyone know the risk of cancer with crohns is it rare to get lymphoma or a high chance to get colon cancer?

nitat is right. There is a small increased risk of getting lymphoma at some point in your life. There is also a small increased risk of getting colon cancer or developing small bowel carcinoma.

With proper monitoring from a GI (meaning you see your GI at least every 4-6 months), it is likely that in the rare event you do get cancer, it will be caught early.

People with Crohn’s disease of the colon or ulcerative colitis have a higher risk for colorectal cancer than the general population. Colorectal cancer rarely occurs
in the first eight to ten years after initial diagnosis of IBD. The risk increases the longer a person lives with the disease. An analysis of all published studies found that as many as 18% of people with IBD may develop colorectal cancer by the time they have had IBD for 30 years.25 The degree of increased risk is also related to the length of colon involved and the severity of dis- ease. Because of this increased risk, people with IBD are advised to undergo more frequent colonoscopies than the general population (every one to two years after eight years of disease). The use of certain med- ications for IBD may increase the risk for lymphoma (blood cancer that originates in the lymphatic system). Two studies found a three to four times increased rate of lymphoma in IBD patients taking medications that

suppress the immune system, such as immunomodula- tors or biologic therapies.26,27 Although this may seem alarming, the overall risk is very low; less than one percent of IBD patients taking these medications will ever develop lymphoma.

Interesting Rose*flo since UCers are likely to have colon involvement compared to CDers so You'd think that UCers actually have a higher risk to a CDers that doesn't have colon involvement but possibly a CDer with crohn's colitis (CD affecting the colon) would have an even greater chance of colon cancer since with CD it can (not always) affect the many layers of the intestinal lining where as with UC it remains on the surface only....I've never heard the risk was as high as 20%, only that it slightly increases every year after 10 years of severe flaring (in the colon specifically) so I would be a prime candidate for colon cancer since I've flared (with crohn's colitis) for 23 yrs straight with no remission until spring 2014) yet my last recent scope (late summer/fall 2014) showed no cancer....the risk is lower from everything I've read and heard.

IBDers tend to get scoped more frequently than non-IBDers so our chances of GI tract cancers have a much better chance of being detected in early stages (provided of course that IBDers all get their routine scopes done).

According to ccfa.org the risk for those with IBD is closer to 18%, so significantly higher, but that is dependent on location of your disease. Still I don't think this is necessary do to the medications, but more Crohn's disease itself

It is under the "Risk for cancer" section of the brochure. We are talking about lifetime risk, so yes, if you read what I quoted above, it is after 30 yrs of the disease and the extent of colonic involvement.

I wasn't sharing this info to scare anyone, but rather to make sure that folks make sure they get regular colonoscopies to screen for colon cancer even in remission if disease is in the colon.

I think the risk of untreated Crohn's disease is even worse....I'm not advocating not taking medication. My friend who has had severe Crohn's for many years and just finished chemotherapy for lymphoma, and she is being advised to stop 6MP but still continue with Humira. At least for now, she has beat the lymphoma, which is awesome, but she has severe Crohn's and can't go without medication. It's all scary, but we have to get our best information, and do the best we can.

Thanks for sharing that. That presentation does make the colon cancer rate look lower than the other publication for Crohn's disease.
