Alternative to this procedure?

My friend is in the hospital. They want to do a procedure which is called MRT-sellink which is kind of like where they use barium and x rays. She had bad experiences in the past including anxiety attacks during the procedure. Is there any alternative to look into the small intestine? She has her colon removed and her small intestine is attached to the rectum.

That just sounds like a small bowel barium follow-through, to be honest. Or is it different to that? I've had a couple of those and don't like them - I'd almost rather drink moviprep than barium.

Anyway, I guess the main alternatives are pill cam and MRI scan. An MRI scan must be suitable, because I have the same bowel setup as your friend and that's what my GI told me I would have if my blood/stool tests came back positive for inflammation.

I've had 4 or 5 MRI scans and never had any barium with them. Okay, I googled it, 'cos something was niggling at me: an MRE does use barium, at least sometimes. For my scans, I did have to drink a litre of solution half an hour beforehand, but it was never barium. I think if your friend has an MRI/MRE, she should clarify her hospital doesn't use barium beforehand.

Well, a small bowel barium follow-through will definitely involve barium - the clue is kind of in the name. All I can suggest is that your friend requests an MRI scan instead.

Sadly my friend passed away yesterday morning. She was only 33 years young.

I am very sorry for your loss. It is always a little extra sad when a life is lost so young.

She had Crohns and familial adenomatous polyposis which caused her to have a desmoid tumor. This was operated and it went well but they found out that she has a clotting disorder. She went into the hospital with lung embolism. She also couldn't feel her legs anymore nor walk. On Tuesday they operated on that to free the arteries so she could walk again. She said that if the surgery doesn't have the result, they would have to amputate. However she never woke up. :'(

I don't know exactly if she got it during surgery but she was on them at one point after the embolism

I am so very sorry. That is just heartbreaking.
