Is it possible to confuse two diseases

Yes, people can be mis-diagnosed, especially when they have Crohn's primarily located in the colon. Entocort might help for both diseases, so I don't think that narrows down a diagnosis. UC generally is in the outer layers throughout your colon, and Chron's is more commonly patchy inflammation and can can burrow through your whole bowel and cause fistulas and accesses, but it doesn't always do that. The treatment for UC or CD is pretty much the exact same, and so honestly it doesn't matter a whole lot which diagnosis you have. Many people are originally diagnosed with one but then a new symptom comes to switch the diagnosis to the other, but typically the treatment doesn't change unless it's just not effective. However, Entocort is a steroid and should NOT be used long-term as a maintenance medication. Your doctor needs to put you on something else to replace the 5-ASAs. Studies show that the 5-ASAs are extremely ineffective and actually don't do much better than a placebo in treating UC and CD.

@scifigal2k I do understand what you are saying and it makes sense. I think my doctor is being cautious with me. My dad had crohns and went undiagnosed for years because back then they just didn't understand much about the disease.

I got scared when I heard so many people from this site say that Entocort didn't work for their problem because it doesn't reach the sigmoid and that particular drug was designed for crohns disease sufferers. They also said that I should ask for a different medication. I put a call in to my doctor but he was away on holiday. Since then my symptoms have lessened.

I will be seeing my doctor in October to find out the next step. I realize I won't be on Etocort long term. I don't really know what else is available though.

@NiceCupOfTea - yes, the 5-ASA's do make a difference with UC. I'm upset that I couldn't stay on them and now I need to take a steroid.
