blood in stool - unusual for me

I have had Crohn's disease for 18 years. A few minutes ago, I had a lot of bright red blood in my watery stool. I have never had blood in my stool before. I am alarmed based on the amount and that this is something new for me. So it is a Saturday night and I am out of state and staying with friends. If it were a weekday, I would call my doctor for advice or visit an urgent care that is within my insurance coverage. My question is....should I be alarmed or is it this something typical with other people with CD.

If the bleeding doesn't stop or slow down then maybe you can call the doc on call for your GI's practice. It is hard with D, but with formed stool if the blood is on the toilet paper or on the outside of the stool it is probably a hemmorhoid. If you are concerned that you are really losing a lot of blood, you can go to the ER. Otherwise, waiting till Monday to call your doc is probably ok. People with Crohn's/colitis or UC more commonly bleed. You can also be bleeding from an infection like c.difficile.

Thanks for responding gumby44. I had diarrhea and lots of blood. I have not been constipated and have not had any symptoms of a hemorrhoid. I had a rectal fissure many years ago and it is not like that. I guess I will see if it continues and call my doctor on Monday.

This can be typical, but usually when you are in a flare or about to flare. I never had blood until 3 years after I developed crohn's. After I started bleeding, everythjg went downhill and I was admitted to he hospital and given IV steroids and dilaudid because the pain and crping became unbearable. If I were you, I'd try to go home early if you can and if not I'd call tour doctor and at least let them know what's going on. Best of luck
