Sunday evening my throat was bothering me so of course I grabbed a flashlight to look at it. To my surprise I noticed on the back of the roof of my mouth was red with a white dot. Well Monday the white dot got bigger and formed a knot that was very red. Today the white dot is a centimeter across and swollen. I saw my primary care dr today. He said I had an abscess due to crohns and prescribed clyndamicin. Well back in April I had an abscess in my tongue and was prescribed clyndamicin and ended up with cdiff. Then in July I had a tooth abscess took clyndamicin and yep got cdiff again. I refuse to take clyndamicin again but im also afraid the abscess could get so big it could block my airway. I called my gi dr and left a message. The pcd said take the meds and we will deal with the cdiff if it happens or be admitted for iv vancomicin. I really was hoping to not be in the hospital for christmas. See the big problem is im allergic to so ooo many meds so it limits what I can take. I just don't know what I should do. Any suggestions.

Are you taking a probiotic? I strongly recommend taking Florastor anytime you are on antibiotics. I have had c. diff. 8 times, so I actually now take 1 Florastor a day all of the time. When I am on antibiotics, I take 4 per day the entire duration and for a week or so afterwards. Florastor is yeast-based, so it is not killed off when you take antibiotics the way that other probiotics are.

I do take a probiotic but not that kind. I'll go get some. I hope it helps

If Clyndimicin has given you c.diff twice, then I think that they should try a different kind of antibiotic this time, and I agree with Scifi that the Florastor might help too. I got c.diff from a Rocephin shot after a cat bite a couple of years ago. I have it again now, possibly from Cipro, but the timing is weird, so I don't know for sure. I hope they biopsied the spot to make sure it's bacterial. Apthous ulcers from Crohn's aren't necessarily a bacterial infection. Check with your GI before taking any antibiotics, I think

They didn't biopsy it but because of the redness and inflamation around it is why they prescribed antibiotics. Im allergic to penicillin, keflex, e-micin, tetracycline, sulfa, and oral flagyl. So there isn't much choice as what I can take.

I just spoke with my gi dr. She read over the pcd report and agrees that I need to take the clyndamicin as well as a probiotic. She said that if I start having diareaha to go into the clinic and have a cdiff test done. If it's positive then she will prescribe vancomicin and oral liquid flagyl. Im having a colonoscopy on the 21st of Dec anyway to see how bad my crohns is. Oh while I was at the dr yesterday he showed me my results of the crp while I was in the hospital on Dec 1-3. It was elevated. The Dr's in the hospital told me it was normal. They really need to get their fax straight.
