Hi all,

I was diagnosed with CD in 2003. In
Jan of this year I was hospitalized due to a bad flare. I was having horrible pain and diarrhea. I was given pred to help get the inflammation under control. My doc figured my body stopped responding to Remicade, which I had been on for almost 8 yrs. I switched to Humira. Started that in early Feb. I have been off pred for a week. Been feeling great. Went in Monday (5/2) for an MRI to follow up and make sure the inflammation had gone down. My GI's nurse called today to tell me the MRI showed significant inflammation and narrowing and the Humira is failing. I go in next Monday to see my GI and discuss my next options…
I'm really curious as to why I have been feeling so well if I have significant inflammation and narrowing? I have absolutely no symptoms. Anyone have any answers or thoughts? I'm feeling a bit discouraged :(

My son (age 19) was diagnosed with Crohn's July 2015. He had diarrhea (two years) but no abdominal pain. However, his colonoscopy showed high levels of inflammation and narrowing of the TI. He started on Remicade in September and the diarrhea went away. However, the narrowing (stricture) continued to worsen and in February he started throwing up. I was very curious why he could feel good for two years and have no symptoms with a stricture / inflammation. The doctor said he could remain asymptomatic until food got "stuck" in his stricture. Once that happened he was sick to the point he needed a resection. That took place six weeks ago and he is doing GREAT! The doctor said a stricture could already be re forming at that site so he will have ongoing colonoscopies and MREs. I hope you stay feeling well and they can find a way to stop the inflammation and reduce the narrowing!

I'm so sorry JenLS. I felt the same discouragement this time around because up until my few days of pain I felt wonderful and thought I was doing great. Never did I expect what they found which was probably going on a long time and made me question whether Humira was actually working for me as well as I thought. Crohns can sadly be really quietly doing damage and depending where the narrowing and inflammation are you may not feel it or have symptoms especially if you are eating a diet that compensates for some of it. You could always get a second option but I suspect it would probably just be a matter of time before they start so best to try another medication now before you are feeling bad or need surgery. Also, prednisone can make you feel really great for awhile but when it totally wears off you start to feel it. It looks like you may just need to try a different med.
