Hi all,
I have been on 6mp for app. 6 months now. Not without problems unfortunately. As soon as I started taking 6mp I felt horrible but I was told that I should give my body time to adjust. After 4 weeks on 50mg my dose was increased to 100mg. I had bloodtests done in the first, second and fourth week after both start and increase: all tests were fine.
When I got really ill in December (complicated pyelonephritis) I continued these meds. My GI did decide however that it was time for an evaluation of the drug's effectiveness and she ordered a mirror-test (not sure if this is the correct name in English, but she tested the amount of 6-TGN and 6-MMP in my body).
It turned out that it was not good at all. My dosage was immediately lowered to 50 mg and 100mg of allopurinol was added to solve the issue. This happened 7 weeks ago. I again had bloodtests in week 1,2 and 4 and another mirror-test in week 4. Yesterday I was supposed to get the results from the second mirror-test, but unfortunately they weren't in yet. She did call me however to inform me that my bloodwork showed that my liver was not doing too good and worsening.
I now have to stop taking 6mp, continue the allopurinol for a week and get bloodwork done on Monday. She did not sound to confident that I could continue this drug and warned me that Thiosix (Lanvin) might be my last resort in this drug category. I am thus preparing myself for yet another switch in my meds.
My GI did seem concerned that this new pure drug could also be a problem for me, in which case I would have to switch to the biologics, which I am really not looking forward to. I was wondering if any of you have also had a bad reaction to 6MP and then succesfully switched to Lanvin? How did the transition go? Was it an easy one to make? Thanks for your comments!
