Hi, I am new to this forum. Thank you in advance for any input.
I was on an SSRI welbutrin for about
3 years. This past December I weaned down because it really wasn't helping my anxiety and panic attacks. I was also on Phentermine which was prescribed by the same Dr because he wanted some weight off of me. I stopped both at that time. On New Years day I thought I had a touch of a stomach bug, I was horribly bloated and crampy in my stomach. I watched what I ate and in a few days I felt less bloated. The same thing occured again, and again. By the first week in March my husband insisted i go to a GI. I went, made an appointment for an EGD to be done in April. The cramping was worse. If i even tried to sip water i was doubled over. First week in April my husband took me to the Er because i hadn't eatin in 5 days. CT with OUT contrast showed inflammation in my ileum. But my pain was at the top of my stomach under my ribs.i was admitted and had the EGD the next morning. Showed some gastritis, they took out a polyp or two and a very tiny hiatal hernia that they were not worried about
. Sent me home on protonix 40mg twice daily and some abx. This week i had a second ct with contrast done. It showed inflammation in my ileum but with a tiny bit of improvement. Now they want me to wait 2 months for colonoscopy . They mentioned IBD or Crohns. So my question is this....i NEVER have had symptoms until i stopped the welbutrin /phentermine. No family hx of and digestive disorders. I was perfectly healthy. Now I am a mess, constantly worried. Looking at Celiacs, crohns, IBD ect....
Not to mention I have completely normal BMS daily. Do you think that the medicine put me in this situation? I have read numerous blogs that Welbutrin treats IBD & Crohns.......
Help!!!!

I don't think so. I'm on bupropion for post-partum depression, and I had zero change the whole time I've been on it.

Or rather going off the medication caused it?

Pretty unlikely. More likely just a coincidence.

Hello, I am sorry to hear what you are going through. Prior to my diagnosis my symptoms were occasional cramps. The pain was above my belly button and below my ribs kind of in the between part. It would come on like waves or contractions - kind of what I imagine the sensation of being in labour might be like but obviously higher up. These waves of cramps would last hours or days and I would not improve until I rested and lay down for a couple of days. Eating was a problem and occasionally when it was really severe I would vomit.
Prior to these cramps hitting for the very first time I had no GI problems at all. The cramps then came and went every few weeks or months for a period of 5 years until I landed in the hospital and was eventually found to have Crohn's in my terminal ileum and where my ileum meets my colon (this was later retracted and I was misdiagnosed but have now been rediagnosed). I had to have surgery on that part of my ileum due to Crohn's complications and afterwards the stomach cramps completely went away for 4 years.
Just to say as well, I have heard that Wellbutrin can help Crohn's symptoms. It may be that this is all a coincidence and that the Wellbutrin was masking your IBD symptoms (if that is what it turns out you have).

Eleanor_rigby thank you for your input. What kind of surgery did you need done -if I may ask? I am terrified of needing any type of ostomy done

Hello, I had a perforation and abscess. My surgery was an emergency and
open rather than laproscopic so it was pretty major!! However I still did not need an ostomy and recovered well. I felt great after about
4-6 weeks post-surgery.
