If you've ever been dx with bacterial overgrowth how was it diagnosed? I'm battling with my new GI right now on what is causing my extreme pain. And I won't go into how narrow minded he is but he put me on Rifaxin in February and is still insisting my pain is related to SIBO but I've never been tested. Is there a definitive test out there?

I know I sound like I'm grasping at straws but I'm just trying to play his game and eliminate all possible causes.

It's a breath test, I think there is a home version of it. If you're on antibiotics you may not test positive for SIBO.

You breath into this plastic bag every 10 minutes for 2 Hours. Then they test the bag.

The breath test for SIBO is not always accurate, so some docs will treat with antibiotics and see if you get better rather than doing the breath test. Sorry you are going through this. I have struggles with this too.

Sorry that you are still suffering. Last year, I took around 8 courses of rifaximin w an interval of 45 days and sometimes less between each course until it cleared. My GI told me before that disbyosis (bacterial overgrowth ) is a characteristic of Crohn's. I don't know whether it got cleared because of the repeated coures of rifaximin or because I had started Remicade then. Up till now, whenever I start having watery d and severe cramps, my GI would suggest a new course of rifaximin but the last flare up (last March) when the flare up was caused by an antibiotic, rifaximin exacerbated my symptoms instead of alleviating them. So frustrating!

The frustrating thing is the only problem I have is pain. And I'm just scared in the back of my mind that there is something else going on.
