For the last couple of months, my Daughter has been having reflux like symptoms. After going to our family Dr. she prescribed a proton pump inhibitor. The symptoms subsided a little, but she's worried that this medication has aggravated her crohn's. She's started having some other pain and discomfort, and has gone from always battling constipation, to more diarrhea like BM's. Does anyone have any experience with this issue, and hopefully some advice?

On which PPI is she?

It's called Pantoprazole.

I'm on Lansoprazole, but I've been on Pantoprazole in the past which made me very nauseous. As for the diarrhea or looser stools, it is listed as an adverse affect of PPI's, saying it may cause diarrhea and also may raise risk of Clostridium Difficile I have chronic diarrhea so it's hard to know if it worsens it, . I don't take mine on a regular basis, but I use to and felt worse instead of better, so now I only take it when I feel I need it. If daughter feels it worsens her crohn's, it needs to be brought up to her doctor so he can keep and eye on it, and maybe he/she can prescribe another type of Reflux medication? Hope she feels better soon.

Thanks for the replies, and just wanted to give a bit of an update anyway. My Daughters reflux seems to have improved, but for the last couple of months she just keeps complaining of not feeling well. Not overtly sick, or necessarily Crohn's related, just not right.

She had some new bloodwork, and got a call today that she had slightly elevated WBC, along with low B12. Her iron and iron stores were pretty normal, which has never happened. She's always been very low.

She will be getting a call from her GI this week to go over her blood work and symptoms and we'll go from there.

73monte, I suffered with acid reflux for years. I have lost count of the PPI's that I was on over the years too. I would wake up in the middle of the night with acid type bile backing up in my throat & coming out of my nose. I finally started looking at my diet, limited caffeine. For other health problems, I started sleeping in my husband's big comfy recliner. I did this for 2 years & it hit me one day my acid reflux had all but disappeared. Typically drs will recommend elevating the head of the bed 6 inches, but it wasn't enough for me. Perhaps your daughter will consider elevating her bed, you can do it with blocks or bed risers.

I was terribly low on B12 a few years back & did B12 injections for quite some time. Now, I take the sublingual OTC B12, so far it's working.

Thanks so much for that advice. I'll definitely pass it on to her. She does avoid caffeine but does still drink decaf daily. The other contributor that she needs to cut back on is red wine.

Will likely try to elevate her bed. Sounds like an easy enough experiment and worth trying.
