I've had lots of bouts of c. diff and had to have a FMT to get them cleared up because I became resistant to all abx. This was only a month or two after FMT were approved by the FDA.
I also avoid abx like the plague, but I've needed them a few times for UTIs, mastitis, etc.
First, tell your doctor about your history. One week of a mild z-pack should be okay. If you get the UTI soon enough, then you won't need much more than that. But an untreated UTI can quickly turn into a kidney infection, especially on Remicade (I've been on a double dose every 6 weeks for almost 9 years).
Second, start drinking cranberry juice like crazy.
Third, get a urine sample done ASAP and also ask for cultures. You can start the abx and if cultures show no growth, stop it immediately. It should only be a couple of days.
Fourth, this could be something else, like diabetes. So have your dr check everything.
Fifth and last, if/when you start the abx, start taking the probiotic FLorastor. Its' the most effective against c diff because it is yeast based, not bacteria based. When I'm on abx, I take 4 per day. And then teh day after the abx is done, I taper and do 3 per day for a week, then 2, then 1 per day. It may be overkill, but like you, I'm pretty paranoid.
