i was thinking, (i know thats dangerous!) , but how much extra TP would i have to buy if i never left the house? so i started thinking of all the places i go when im not home. and it was many. what if we had to pay every time we used a restroom? are there any pay toilets left? i can remember vividly when i was a kid and going places where it was a dime to get in the restroom. lots of kids just crawled under, but i m to darn old for that now , and the floors are nasty. so i am on the search for an old fashioned pay toilet . i want a picture!

that reminds me of a rhyme , we used to say as kids,
goes something like this,

there is a really whacky Toilet in Northland NZ that's a tourist attraction, it was built by an Austrian Architect, Freidrich Hundertwasser in the 70's. Take a peek.

I went to France 15 years ago as a teenager w/ a group from school. At that time they had self cleaning restrooms that you had to pay for. Also we used another "public" restroom where you had to pay (I don't remember how much). It was a hole in the ground - seriously. You paid and got one tissue - wipe your butt once or dry your hands your choice! My husband wants to go Europe and travel someday.... HUMMMM I may have to take some TP w/me....

And you remember pay phones for a dime too smile Actually I rem that, but I never saw a pay toilet. I can see my self kicking in the door in one of those "gotta go now" moments.
I collect old cameras and have just branched into old telephones. Maybe I could find a pay toilet to add to the collection smile

Im only 25 and remember paying once when I was "downtown" shopping w/ my mom. I was probably only 5 or 6 though. I had to pay at gas stations in Spain too 4 years ago. But Randy your post made me laugh b/c my hubby has bad IBS-d and I obviously have crohns and we really don't buy that much TP. We realized it was because most of us do all of our buisness either at work or on our way to work or on the way home from resturants etc. It must save us a fortune. There is one rest stop I frequent that has very very large rolls of TP. When they get down to 10 uses left or so they change them and put the tini roll in a basket w/ a sign "free travel tp." I usually keep one in the car or purse.

When I did the CCFA walk last year in Boston, I stopped at a public restroom (above some stores) and had to climb back down the stairs and get a quarter from my friend to go the bathroom! It is the first pay bathroom I've ever used (I'm 32).

I thought that pay toilets were now against the law? Maybe that's only for public facilities or something, like stores and what not. Seems like it had something to do with ADA requriements, though...

Hi Randy I pay big time when the D is around and that's at home..I was a little envious of those that don't need such a supply. I can remember those days of pay to enter toilets and am so greatful they ended that .lol gail

I just came back from Amsterdam and Brujes, Belgium where you pay to use almost all of the public

bathrooms. I took a half of an Immodium every other day when i was there and that semed to keep things in check, but wondered what I would have done if I was having problems. Some of the places have a person that can dispense change, but most of the facilities require you to insert coins into a slot to admit you to the bathroom.

you know i wouldn't mind paying even like a dollar if they had someone in there like the old days keeping it clean and making sure that the little kids, and some bigger ones did not destroy the place.

That is a good point. I've been in some really scuzzy bathrooms in public places.

I went to Europe/ France when I was 15 also, with a group from school. what a coincidence. We both had to pee in a hole in the floor when we were 15....supposedly visiting one of the more "developped", "cultured" countries of the world>

there is a pay toilet in the south side of pittsburgh...it was really strange walking down the sidewalk and there it was because it looks like big box...i didn't use it, seemed kinda gross,
the whole area is bars so i guess people need a place to go...sorry no pic smile

I would gladly pay .50-1.00, when on the road, for a clean private bathroom. Just a tip for others, if you're ever travelling and really need to clean up or spend a lot of time in the bathroom, most truck stops have shower rooms with toilets in them. Usually it costs $7-8, but if you're in bad shape and really need some private time, it's a good place to go.

there is a pay toilet in hollywood california at a mcdonalds. i think they did that because there is alot of homeless people around there.. not sure if that is the real reason though.

Hey Randy,

The worst for me is bathrooms with a valet. I remember eating at a restaurant in Ft. Lauderdale that had a tiny two-stall bathroom with a valet in it. It must be some sort of state law in Florida that requires a valet in every public bathroom b/c they were everywhere. I went in needing to stock the porcelain pond with brown trout and figured if he's crazy enough to sit in there then I'm just going to let it fly. I was on vacation and never planned on seeing that dude again but I'll bet he had some a story to tell his other valet buddies.

Who the hell would want that job anyway (although as I'm wrapping this up, I just realized it would be a great job for Crohnies b/c we'd never be far away from a bathroom and we'd have extra incentive to keep it clean). [img]/community/emoticons/tongue.gif[/img]

hey POOP! where ya been? yea sounds strange to have a "watcher" . i remember in eorope , many places had an attendant. you paid so much for TP, so much for soap and if you wanted a towel to dry your hands that was extra. the guy would sit in a little chair by the door and would be dressed like a doorman.

Well by far my worst now is trying to figure out a composting toilet in a barn... see my post "uh oh- didn't know how to work toilet"
