Are we allowed to take Alleve? Does anyone know, it has Naproxen in it. I heard it is good for joint pain.  Thanks.

Alleve is an NSAID, like Advil, and can tear up your stomach.  Not recommended for Crohn's patients.

Hi Jenn-

I have horrible joint pain from remicade and I have been taking tylenol arthritis. It works almost as well as my 800mg Ibuprofin that we are not supposed to be taking.....I know we are allowed to take tylenol but I am not sure about alleve.

If it makes you feel any better, I tried Alleve once, before I was diagnosed, and it did zip-all for me.

I can take Advil without any problem, but when I tried Aleve, I had the worst stomach pain and heartburn. It lasted for days!!! I think it just depends on the person. I can't take Tylenol because my liver is sensative to it.

I think the main issue with NSAIDs is that intestinal bleeding is a possible side effect. For us crohnies with our erosions, ulcers, fissures and fistulas is won't take much to start bleeding. A friend of mine with an ulcer that he didn't know about almost died from intestinal bleeding as a result of taking NSAIDs for 2 weeks.

I cannot toleratre aleve, the naprosen made me flare. i am however able to handle advil but I try to stick with tylenol

Shoot, boy do I feel like the dummy of the day...........my hubby has Crohns and the arthritic pain that goes with it.  He takes Aleve and Naproxen both.

I best check this out.  Thanks for posting this information.

Alleve is just the brand name OTC naproxen. Like how tylenol is acetaminophen and motrin is ibuprofen. Before I was dx with Crohn's I tried it [alleve] a couple times for menstrual cramps and it did nothing, and since you can only take it every 12 hours, I was suffering the whole day and afraid to take anything else on top of it!
