those with CD and constipation.. what do you do to help you go???

The thread for those who have any degree of constipation is interesting.  I was wondering, besides the CD meds you  take what else do you find helpful??  What has your GI recommended.  I think that the more we share.. the better informed we are!  Prof

Well I have always been a fan of using stool softners. They have worked the best for me to get things moving again. And I don't get the cramps like I do with laxatives.

My gastro initially recommended Metamucil or Citrucel. Neither helped much. He then prescribed Miralax (generic name is glycolax). Miralax is now available over-the-counter at any drug store. It's a powder that you put into a drink of some kind. I don't think it has much of a flavor, if any. However, if you don't get it mixed well it can be a little gritty. I found it to be the most help. I started out on one capful a day and have had to move up to two capfuls (one AM and one PM). I hope you find some relief!

I use glycolax and my best hint is mix it into something warm like tea or coffee if you can drink them, even warm water works better than cold.

Since I've been on Humira, and everything has healed up (thank goodness), I've had very bad constipation. I had heard that taking laxatives can make you become dependant upon them? Does anyone know if that is true, and if glycolax/miralax does that too?

my gi says it is fine to take glycolax forever. I figure if I am dependant, oh well...it is either that or explode :)

Thanks yogaprof! I'll check with gi, to see if he agrees. I need something, and the fiber he suggested just isn't working!

BTW, your bio says: "In December had adhesions cut through a laparoscopy". Are the "adhesions" scar tissue? I just had a scope and my gi says there is no inflammtion left, just scar tissue, which has narrowed the passageway! I'll discuss it further with him at my follow up, but was curious to find out if that's what you had, and if there is any way to fix it.

I had three pelvic surgeries in my 20s, the last one was a hysterectomy. then 20 years later I was diagnosed with crohns, but my GI suspected adhesions. they can't be seen through any test except a surgical look. adhesions are scar tissue that are like rubber bands that attach anywhere and cause all sorts of trouble! I am not sure what your doc saw in the scope, but I know adhesions can cause narrowing and pain.

I was unable to take the Miralax so my doc prescribed Kristolose. It mix it with water every morning and it works great.

Can taking 2 stool a day cause hard stools??? Weird thing.... my stools are harder lately.. feels like they are STUCK.. I do 'go" tho. In the morning. I seem to have many bowel movements mostly softer??? Are stool softeners making my bowels NOT work??? Scared prof

they shouldn't make you not work. they just add liquid to them, as far as I know.
