My new GI has suggested I try VSL #3 as a maintenance program for my Crohns. What is this stuff and has anyone had any experience (positive or negative) using this?

My GI Doc suggested it too. I'm currently taking a packet a day. It's a mixture of several (8 or so?) kinds of beneficial bacteria. Your gut is colonized with good bacteria and bad bacteria. Some schools of thought suggest that one of the causal factors of Crohn's disease is an imbalance of the bad to the good. VSL#3 will supposedly hyper-colonize you with good bacteria. They say it takes about
a month. For me it goes firmly under the "can't hurt" category, so I'll try it.
Crazy expensive though. 30 packets (a one month supply) is like $80 at my Walgreen's. The actual stuff is about
a tablespoon of powder that you mix with cold water. Tastes like faintly sweet sawdust (that's probably the maltodextrin they add). You have to keep it refrigerated. Hardly anyone stocks it down here in Jupiter. I'll give a month or so, then scrap it if it's not doing anything for me.

my gi ran a study using it, he thought it showed promise but had become outrageously expensive because of it. hope it works for you.

i've heard good things about
it from other cd'ers. i switch between primal defense ultra and th1-s. i dont know if they do anything for me, but the theory sounds good and there is some anecdotal evidence that this is good for us. i'm considering give vsl 3 a try one of these days.
