"Babies Need More Vitamin D
Canada is forging ahead of the United States in recommending increases in vitamin D intake. The latest advice comes from the Canadian Paediatric Society, which has recommended that during pregnancy and while nursing their babies, women consider taking 2,000 IU of vitamin D daily. But even 2,000 IU may not be enough to ensure that babies get enough vitamin D through breast milk to protect them from an increased risk of asthma, diabetes, autoimmune diseases, multiple sclerosis, dental malformation and inflammatory bowel disease, all disorders that have been linked to vitamin D deficiencies early in life. Meanwhile, the Canadian Cancer Society has recommended that adults take 1,000 IU of vitamin D daily to lower their risks of several types of cancer including breast, lung and colon. In the United States, two government sponsored studies are investigating the effects of giving 4,000 IU of āDā daily to pregnant women and 6,000 IU to nursing mothers. So far, investigators report these high doses have caused no problems."
