colostomy and odor

Hi everyone, Haven't been into the site in a bit. Good to see you all and all the new people. So much wonderful information and insights. I have a question for those of you that have a colostomy. I worry about odor when emptying the pouch. Does anyone have advice about how to prevent this. Thanks

Hi cbass.

There are drops that you can pop in to your bag. Various ostomy suppliers do these drops, and have different scents.

I find that when I have eaten fish, the odour is more potent.........I just make sure I have a good air freshener after emptying lol.

I think the M9 drops are no longer made. On the ostomy site on HW they suggest peroxide but I forget the percentage they use and the amount. you may want to go check out that site for help

A squirt 3% hydrogen peroxide in the bag works like a charm without the mega costs for ostomy drops that really don't work all that well.

M9 drops are still made, they are made by Hollister now. They work great, you just have to use more than it says on the bottle. A good squirt each time you empty.

I was told not to use the hydrogen peroxide as it compromises the inside seal of the pouch, which is made to keep in odor. Lots of people on the ostomy web site use it though.

I'll stay with my M9 drops, I know they work.
