I am hoping someone can give me input on this.  I was just diagnosed with Crohn's on 10/9/07.  Originally, dr. thought it was UC.  Biopsy and diagnostics proved otherwise.  Currently, I'm taking Predisone and Lialda.  I have two questions:  I have what appears to be ulcers on the back of my tongue that appear to run down my throat.  I have often experienced a burning sensation in my throat.  I know Crohn's can affect the entire GI track.  Does anyone know if these ulcers could be related to my Crohn's?  Also, my dr. has me taking the once a day medication Lialda.  Has anyone taken this before and has it worked?

Yes, these could be related to CD. I have on going issues with CD in my mouth & throat, I also was dx with it in my esophagus. You should probably see an ear nose & throat specialist or your primary doc might script something for you.

I have to watch what I eat & drink to avoid "upper" flares.

Thank you for you post. What is an "upper" flare? I have experienced terrible reflux, but I have also been diagnosed with a hiatal hernia.

I get sores all over my tongue and throat...eating certain foods causes bad burning. I use cepacol mouth wash and it clears them up alot faster than anything...hydrogen proxide works too

I have wondered about this too. How do they diagnose crohn's of the upper gi tract? (mouth, throat etc)

 Do they bother to diagnose it if you have chrohn's in the lower gi tract and they are treating you for that? I get mouth ulcers but not the severe type that some people describe (really deep) Sometimes my mouth and throat burns.  Could this be crohn's?  I plan to ask the gi office about this when I see them in december.

I go back Nov. 9 for more testing. I plan to ask then, so I'll be sure to post about what I was told.

When I go back, I have to drink barium and they are going to take a "picture". I am not sure what this is for. I feel so lost! I only talked to my doctor briefly over the phone when he called to give me the news.  He told me what Crohn's was and  said to continue taking the meds he'd prescribed.  I didn't even learn from him about the mouth ulcers.  I happened to notice them when brushing my teeth over the weekend.  If it weren't for the internet and this website, I would be even more frustrated.

Sorry I used my own terminology.......I was diagnosed w/ CD in my esophagus during an upper scope. I had been having "chest pains" along with nausea and trouble swallowing. If I eat too much chocolate or spicy foods I tend to get ulcers and "sore" throat feeling.

Taking a good probiotic can keep mouth sores at bay, it's worked for me and I used to get really long, odd shaped, deep ulcers in the roof of my mouth....at first I thought it might be cancer but it's crohns, I no longer get this since taking the primadophilus reuteri daily.
