My doc wants to up to 150mg. He has scheduled a special blood test to see if I would be susceptible to problems (along with the normal sed rate etc) anyone on this dose? I am worried it is too high. He also prescribed zofran (sp?) for my nausea which is one of my worst CD symptoms. anyone have tips for this drug? I get the worst nausea in the am so should i take before bed or do I take when the nausea hits? thanks!!! Karen

i am on 150 mg of Azasan (Azathioprine). My only bad side effect has been hairloss-a lot. Good side effects? I can eat anything/everything without any repercussions although I have not tried beets but I wouldn't eat them even if i didn't have CD. I don't take any other Rx's and I feel great, well, almost great.
good health,
laura

dosing is usually between 1-3mg/kg. 1 mg/kg being on the low side, and 3 mg/kg being as high as you will see in Crohn's. 150mg sounds like a pretty normal dose.

I have been on 150mg of Imuran for the last year and I haven't had any side effects. I have been feeling a lot better and can actually eat some of the things that I counldn't before.

Are you taking your imuran at night? If you aren't that might be the cause of some of your nausea.
I was on 200 mg. of imuran for almost 2 years, and then I had high liver enzymes in March, so I was lowered, but now, I'm in the low range for the imuran, so they aren't sure if it was the imuran causing the elevation or not, but better to be safe than sorry. We just upped my dose of imuran a little to 125. I get the prom. metabolites down in a couple of weeks, and we will see were I am at then. If I am still low, we will up my dose again.

150mg is normal, I just started at 75mg (going onto day 5 now)
I take it around 2pm, I feel a little dizzy since I began it but then again i'm on pred and tapering every week so it could be that.
I haven't got the nausea side effect so I think i'm good. I know it's too soon to tell i'm feeling better as Imuran can take months to fully kick in, but I feel a tad better the last two days, is that from the Imuran already? I doubt it can be, or am I wrong? LOL

thanks everyone, I take my imuran in the AM. I had terrible nausea before starting any meds and it actually went away for a while while on imuran/ pentasa/entocort so imuran may not be the reason. the only meds i take at night are a muscle relaxer and my pentasa. I am glad 150 is a pretty normal dose. I took my first 150 this morning. the zofran worked great this morning. My insurance only pays for 30 pills a month of the generic because it is a costly drug. That really made me mad cause it is mainly used for chemo patients and they would need it more than once a day. makes me angry :( thanks everyone! I knew I could count on all of you for info! really helped me not worry about taking the medicine. I was a littel weary of uping the dose. Karen

Karendee I take Zofran 8 mg. first thing every morning. I get up really early everyday (3:30 am) and take it then. Sometimes if I am having a bad day, I will take another about
6-8 hours later. Don't use Imuran, so no tips there, other than when I did take it I took it at bedtime. That helped with the nausea.

thanks Nanners, I got the 4mg of zofran (generic version) and it did help this morning but today the nausea was not too bad. I guess I can take it when I wake up. Karen

I take 150 mg of imuran too since the 3rd of oct. I had some hairloss from the asacol but it went on turbo boost the first 1.5 months I went on the imuran although now it seems to have stabilized as of this past week. I'm not bald but my hair thinned out a lot so 2 haircuts later you can't notice it and people actually think I look cute! LOL if they only knew WHY I cut my hair.
Um I take mine at:
noon
6pm
midnight (cause I work nightshift and those times work for me)
I am most nauseus from taking it up to about
45 min after and then it goes away. I actually tolerate it more if I eat a lil something while taking it. I will tell you that the first couple of weeks the nausea kicked my butt and I was even more tireder than I already was so it is good that you got zofran for that NOW.
what else.... I started noticing a difference in how I felt after about
2 weeks. I know they say that you won't get the full effect until 8 weeks so I am kind of excited to see what the full effect will be. My stools started getting more normalish in consistency and the fluctuations are now less and less. I was on asacol for 2.5 months and although I didn't have D all the time, I still was fluctuating between C and D EVERYDAY but I was afraid of taking the imuran cause I wasn't too keen on taking a chemo drug. I'm ok with taking it now but I would rather have the option of going off of it someday to have kids. I already did this once I started the asacol but make sure to take vitamins and a probiotic. Just in case.
oh here's a p.s. just know that you might be more succeptible to the cooties floating around. OMG I got a measly simple cold which my old body could kick in 4 days and it took me 20 days to get over it.
Take care

malakai, thanks for the info... I was a little worried about colds and such. I thought the higher dose might make it harder to get rid of them. Heck it seemed before I took and CD meds I always took longer to get over stuff than other people. Karen

you're welcome... so many people on here have helped me and if giving my experience helps someone I feel like I gave back.
I don't know if you do flu shots (very controversial subject on here) but that cold scared the crap out of me so I got one anyway on the 21st day. mercury or no mercury (I already eat fish and am on a chemo drug so what's a little more something in my body). I don't know if it will work but heck I work in a pediatric urgent care with the lil rug rats so I thought why not. =0)

Karendee, how much do you weigh? I am on 100 mg and my doc won't up the dose unless I gain weight. I weigh 130 now. I wonder how effective my dose is because I don't see a huge shift in my blood counts. When I tried to come off pentasa earlier this summer I got all my old symptoms back again and that really has made me wonder whether I'm getting the full effect of the imuran. I have been on it for over a year so you would think I should be able to come off the pentasa by now.

bellenstein.... my doc said I have to take both the asacol and the imuran. WOW I didn't know that once you went on the imuran that you could even drop the first line drug..... something to look into. =0)

Belleenstein, I am a chubby chronie that could use to lose weight so that is not an issue for me, I guess that is why my Doc does not worry upping my dosages. I am also getting some kind of genetic test or metabolic not sure what he called it. called tmpt, or something similar. My Doc says it can tell him how my body metabolized the drug. Also, I am going to be on Pentasa as a maintenance drug. I don't think he plans to take me off that one... he says it helps keep the Pred steroids away. Which is OK with me. Karen

I have been on 200 but the Prometheus test showed it's still not at a therapeutic level. So the doctor upped it to 250, and I have to have the test again next week. I think that's as high as he's willing to try; he said if it's still not doing anything we'd "give humira a shot." I said, "literally, you mean." I am wondering whether medicare pays for that. Prescript
ion plans don't cover injectables, if I remember correctly. Anyone know? I'm off the remicade now, since it had stopped working.

Zofran is a wonderful med it works like a charm . Its a tiny pill you put on your tongue and it dissolves instantly taste yummy too med works in about
1-2 minutes its incredible .
As far as the immuran goes its given by body weight

Sugarmarie , I got the generic zofran and it is a pill you swallow and it is not working that well for me :( maybe there is a difference in the generic? if Imuran is by body weight then no wonder i am needing more I am chubby! Lois, I also had that test and I am waiting for the results... Karen

Imuran is the one think I can't take b/c it gives me a false appendices attack the doc's said that it can cause that symptom at first I thought it was me passing another kidney stone (another crohns by product) but it took me two or three times of not taking it and seeing what happens.
