ileostomy people question

I have to ask the folks who have an ileostomy if they ever get dehydrated quickly.
I can get a cold or flu or be out side in the heat and become dehydrated in no time.
If I have mostly water in my bag and get up 3-5 times in the night to empty I can tell I am getting sick and will start to feel week and dehydrated and my voice gets week and I have to make sure I hydrate myself.
This has put me in the ER 2 times in ten years but I have many times were I pulled myself out of dehydration.
Does any one have a similar situation? I plan on consulting this with my specialist my next appt.

Yes, this is something you should take seriously and maintain as strictly as possible. If I remember from one of your other posts you've had 17 feet intestine removed... since we only have 17-24 feet small intestine and 5 feet large, I assume you have short bowel and fast transit time. Under these circumstances Anti-motility medications are what is needed to maintain hydration... it slows the intestines down giving it a little more time to absorb fluid. Even with meds you have to keep a close eye on it... Too many episodes of severe dehydration can be damaging. You didn't mention what intestines you have left to you and that comes into play with absorption of fluid.

MDdave. had that problem when i had my Jujenostomy. and to an extent have it now with the samll amount of intestine i have left. (about 80cm) (2feet) give or take. fluid runs right through me. . of course i can rehydrate myself with an IV whenever i need to, but that wont work for you. as you probebly have figured out already, you can tell when your body is giving you signals. twice in ten years seems to be a good record for anyone in your situation. i say .
