anti depressants-side effects- what works?

My shrink is really pushing  anti depessants.  I AM depressed... been out of work now for almost 3 years. YES..on disablity but feel so useles.  Besides the crohns, I have many accidents due to the prolase and have recently been dx. with hypothryroidism.. ( what else can go wrong)  Also need to take neurotin due to a dental injury while getting a routine injection which has left my tongue with no FEELING.     I am down but am sooo afraid of the side effects.  If there are some.. I get them

 I am interested in which  anti dperessants  this group has tried for depssion realting to the long term effects.. I really want to know what the side effects are!!  Was there alot fo weight gain?? Diarrhea???  Constipation.  I cannot get constipated due to a rectal prolapse!

So... if possible please share your experiences with which drugs.  He was taling about Cymbalta.

I don't have any personal experience with antidepressants, so I can't help with that part of your post, but I just wanted to offer a possible ray of light regarding the dental issue. If this is something that happened relatively recently, it might still go away. Several years ago, my tongue went partially numb after a dental injection. However, the numbness gradually went away. I don't remember the exact time span, but I know that it was much, much better after a month, and I think totally gone within two or three months. I hope that perhaps you might have the same good luck.

Hey there,

I take the Cymbalta for the depression and it also helps with the anxiety.  I have not had any severe side effects.  Of course each person is an individual and the drugs will react different for others.

Hope you find one that works for you.

I took Prozac for a bit and got heartburn from it. When I worked at a jail the females used to complain of heartburn from prozac but not the guys for some reason. Can't remember if you are male or female, sorry!!

hi prof - i just started zoloft for anxiety (zoloft is also an anti-depressant) almost 2 weeks ago now. i also started 6mp at the same time. one of which is causing some mild nauseous that comes in waves. i don't know if i am feeling "better" per se. i know it has worked well for a lot of people so i am going to give it another week. i also take ativan when needed for anxiety and trazodone which is an anti-depressant that i use for sleep. i have not had any problems taking either of those meds. but also, zoloft is supposed to have less side effects than most meds. i understand what you are going through. it took my pcp months to talk me into taking someting for anxiety every day. keep us posted, i will post an update probably by next week how i am doing.

I took a pretty new one called Cipralex for depression and for me it worked great with no side effects at all, after about a year I went off them and have been fine and not needed to go back yet....so maybe that can be one to look at, but of course as said earlier, to each thier own and what may of worked perfect for one may have effects for another, so mostly its trial and error I presume.

I'm on Cymbalta and have been for almost three years. Before that I was on Effexor ER, I ended up maxing out the dosage and my doc wanted to try a new med. Seems to work for me. No weight gain, no side effects that I notice when i take it...I do know when I forget to take it; I take it in the morning, but if i forget, around 4-5pm things get really spacey for me and I don't feel quite right. Then, when I do take it and my dizziness goes away after about hour. Hope this helps.

This is my experience pre crohn's. I've been on 3 diff antidepressants before I got diagnosed with bipolar II and did well on all 3 although after a few years, the effects would start to wear off so they'd change me to a diff one and then I'd be fine again. I agree that it is trial and error and once you get the right drug, it will definately will help you "get out" of the depression funk. I have found that taking pills + seeing my therapist is the best mix for "keeping me out" of depression. =0)

started off with prozac + buspar 1995-1999
then took paxil 1999-2002
then celexa 2002-2006

Didn't have any funky side effects on any of the 3, although with the paxil, if I waited too long to take it or forgot to take it, I would get dizzy until I took it.

Most anti depressants take a few weeks to kick in so don't freak out if your mood doesn't change right away. It will get better.

Technically you're not support to drink alcohol but in case you do.... #1 it is a depressant so sometimes if I drank I would get re depressed for a couple of days and #2 it is intensified by the antidepressant so you get tipsy quicker.

Thanks.... And Writer....The dental thing.. been a YEAR!!!!! The only thing that has helped is the neurotin. I did go to a specialist who said my lingual nerve was severed!

I will consider taking something altho I trully believe that my depression is caused by "my life" more than a chemical imbalance.

I thought the same thing- that it was what I have gone through for 10 years to be diagnosed plus a few other stresses, what they call situational anxiety or depression. It is my understanding that those types of stressors can cause a chemical imbalance. I started taking zoloft about 6 weeks ago and I feel it makes problems easier to handle. I am going through significant stress right now that I know would have made me a basket case and unable to function. It seems to be helping a little with my gut also which is a plus.

I started taking Cymbalta back in July. Mainly for General Anxiety Disorder but I also had issues with chronic pain from Crohn's Arthritis. I couldn't believe how much better I feel while taking it. I can even climb stairs. I still have GAD but I can handle it better.

Oof! So sorry about the nerve. Mine just got nicked during a Novocain injection. Yours sounds like it was sentenced to the guillotine.

I never had a nerve damaged on the tongue, but had it in the leg. It was accidentally cut during surgery. I also had to take neurontin, which helped a bit.

The nerve should recover after a few months, as another poster said.

Been a YEAR and without the neurotin no recovery! The specialist I see says it could take up to years.. if then. He is an expert in lingual nerve damage at the univ. of pa. This, in addition to the crohns and recurring rectal prolapse ( YES.. had one 10 years go.. had major surgery... and it came back.. happens only in 10% of the cases!) has sent me over the deep end. I trully don't think there are enough drugs or alcohol at tiems to make it all go away!!!

I have taken lexapro in the past for my depression. did good for me and finally weaned off when i felt stable again.

I've been on Zoloft since my father passed away last year.  I started off on 50 mg, went to 100, then back down to 50 and now I take 25.  I can't seem to get all the way off of them without wanting to hurt people, so I just take the 25 mg and the world is a better place.  When I took the 100 mg, I didn't feel like me.  I couldn't cry, even when I wanted to.  My father's death was unexpected, as he was only 50 years old and I was the one who had to remove life support & saw him die, so I had a post-traumatic stress thing going on.  Hope you find something that works for you.
