Remicade and possible bladder infection

Hello,

I have not posted in a while, but I usually drop in a couple times a week to see what is happening with everyone.

I have a question, I am going for Remicade in about a week.  I think I may have a bladder infection, but I am not sure.  I was tested early in November and it seems as though there is nothing abnormal.  And now I cannot get a follow-up appointment until Dec 22.  What if I had my treatment and had a bladder infection? 

And if I have a bladder infection, does anyone know if I can take antibiotics while on Remicade?

Hi Karine - I'm not sure specifially about bladder infections, but they always ensure that I am not sick prior to getting my Remicade treatments.

You should call your clinic (or wherever you get your infusion) and tell them. I don't think getting antibiotics while on Remicade is the problem. The problem is in having your infusion with an active infection. If you can get on some antibiotics now, you should probably be o.k. to have your infusion next week.

You may have a vaginal fistula that is bothering your urethra.  I thought I had a UTI but all my tests came back negative, so I went to a urologist who noticed a little hole right outside my urethra.  Previous to that I had my GI tell me that she felt a closed fistula that pointed toward my vagina.   

After that, though, both the urologist and the GI wouldnt go further to look at the problem.  They each said it was the other's issue mad   But luckily it must have closed (probably due to a remicade infusion).   

If your tests are negative you might want to think about not saying anything to your doctor, because if they think you have an infiltrate they wont let you get your infusion (because it lowers the effectiveness of your immune system).   I know most people on here will think I'm wrong to say that, but that is what I would do.   Now I only mention this paragraph because your post made it sound like the tests for bladder infection came back negative.  

You could also have a fistula to your bladder.     Regardless of where a fistula is, if it IS  a fistula causing your problem, Remicade is the best course of action.

Hi,

I read your post and I have been on remicade since august and you should have no problem with the infection and the medication.  I have had bladder infections while taking remicade.  You will be fine just let them know when you go in for your remicade.

I don't know about remi and antibiotics but I do know that cranberry juice does wonders for bladder infections, and if you drink it daily it can keep them at bay, so if the remi is causing it then load up on cranberry juice...take probiotics especially if you're on antibiotics.

Thank you everyone for your responses.  My tests did come back negative, but there is a doubt which is why I was asking these questions. 

So I will mention it at the clinic and load up on cranberry juice.
