Humira in the butt?

I have to start taking Humira because Remicade isn't working for me, and it is my last option before surgery. I had my first four injections, and they really hurt. I was wondering if you can get them in the butt, which I think would be less painful than in my belly or legs, since there isn't that much fat there. Any opinions would be great!

Sorry, you can't take it in the butt. I just did my 3rd treatment today. I was told by the nurse, only the stomach and/or upper thigh -- right or left leg.

Good tips.

I ice it down for about 15 to 20 min to get the area nice and numb. it helps alot.

Take the Humira out of the fridge and let it sit while you ice up.

You can also take a Benadryl  about 30 min before the shot.

Nope, instructions are for front of thigh or stomach.

It does get better. Let it get to room temp first. Ice the area (I don't bother doing this but others say it helps). Go VERY slowly when you push the medication in.

I wondered about my butt, too, as it is the only fat place I have. but I used my belly and really it didn't hurt at all. I didn't ice, I just went for it.

Something about shots in the stomach creeps me out a little bit, so I've always just gone for the legs. I've had some pretty horrendous bruising, but the pain is definitely less when you ice the heck out of the area before and after (just don't rub the area afterward, it messes up the injection).

We use the syringe for injection. My 11 year old son says icing makes it hurt worse. We let the med come to room temp, always inject in the belly (he says this hurts less than the thighs) and then he uses a warm compress on the area for a couple minutes to soothe the burning pain.

Also, we've found that if you make sure you're a good 2-3 inches away from the area of the belly button it hurts a lot less.

Can't do the butt - that's for IM injections not subcutaneous ones. We were told there were 3 spots: belly, thighs, back of upper arm. We were also told the back of the upper arm was the most sensitive of the three areas and realistically not a good choice.

I found that if you try your outer thigh (farthest within the range, of course) it hurts a little less.

Today I will take my injections for the 9th time (been on humira now for 18 weeks, 2 shots every other week)  The last three times I have left the pens sitting on the counter for at least one hour (always less than two hours)  I check them to make sure the serum remains clear....and then I hit the button and let the pen do the work.  I have quit pre-icing the area since i feel it makes the area tougher...I do have an ice pad ready for after the injection, but have not need it since I started letting the drug come up to room temp....BTW...room temp is a subjective term.  I live in Florida so i would imagine that my room temp is different than Chicago....so maybe it is best to say I let the drug get up to about 75 degrees.

The syinge is so much better than the pen for me. There still is stinging but at least I can control the speed at which the med goes in. Yes it takes a bit longer than the pen but when it begins to burn I just stop pressing the plunger for a second or two. I also warm the humira up as instructed but I place the syringe in my hand and hold the syringe until it is warmed up to my body temp. I also do the icing my leg prior to the injection. As for the butt there is a lot of muscle there so it is not a good place for the injection. If you have someone else giving you the injection it can be done in your arm like many other injections can be.
