Hi there. I have suffered from migraine headaches most of my life. There are typically two types of migraines. One is the classical and the other the common migraine. The classical migraine is usually triggered by hormones, a sudden drop in barometric pressure, certain sensitivities to food(red wine, aged cheese etc)...the first indication that you will get this migraine is the typical aura that occurs 20 minutes or so before the headache. ...it consists of flashing lights in front of your eyes, blurred vision, sudden nausea or vomiting ....then the pain hits over, behind and above one eye.It is quite sudden and extremely , violently painful right from the get go. The common migraine usually begins more slowly , sometimes with a tension headache that gets worse over hours or days...your entire head hurts at first, then the pain behind the eye begins.
I used to have to go to the ER twice a week for injections of Demerol and Gravol or phenergan or stemetil to handle the vomiting. I would go home to sleep it off, but the headache would usually persist for about 3 days. Then my head would feel bruised and swollen.
If you continue to have such painful headaches it would be worthwhile to mention it to your doctor. There are many migraine meds out there....some to prevent them and some to try to stop them dead in their tracks like Imitrex.
If you think your headaches are tension related, you might try some Tylenol #1's which are sold behind the pharmacy desk so you have to ask the pharmacist, but they don't usually require a RX. They have a bit of codeine in them that can help take away some of the tension that is making your headache worse.
I sure hope this helps you a bit. I know how debilitating migraines can be....they are horrible, horrible and I don't wish them on my worst enemy. Feel better soon and don't hesitate to see your doctor about these if they continue.
Love and prayers,
Mary
