I Have a friend who has cystic fibrosis and is now 25, she is bieng treated but she constantly is getting,
sinus problems, swolen eyes and headaches, but doctors dont know what causes it have you any ideas?

Also she does alot of sport, and has once had an asthma attack and fainted, do you think she should stop completely?
is it damaging her health?

And lastly she wants to go to new zealand to live for 6 months, and im not so sure its a good idea, what do you think,
what things does she need to think about before going?

Chronic Sinunitis occures quite frequently in CFers. What this is is a sometimes painful persistant inflammation of the mucus membranes in and around the nose and eyes. This can be caused by allergies or asthma as well. She might want to try taking a nose spray - that might help her. As for anything else, is she seeing a CF specialist at an accredited CF clinic? Because they should know that the problem is with this if they are specialists.

thanks but do you think she is damaging herself by exercising too much or is this a good thing to do,
if you have cystic fibrosis?

HI I have a 16 year old daughter with CF. Physical activity is good it keep the lungs working. Idleness makes for a breeding ground for infecton. But your friend should know her limits and know when to back off. Along with a nasal spray to help with the sinus problem, a hypertonic saline rinse is helpful too. (easy to make at home) . As long as your friend takes care of herself it shouldn't matter where she is. I look at it as let them live life to the fullest. We never know what the future holds

I have a little girl with CF only 5 short years old.  The activity is awesome for them, the Asthma attack is concerning.  I would make sure that due to environmental asthma and allergies that she looks into creating an environment within her home that is completely toxin free.  We have and know so many with asthma that this has helped and for those with asthma alone, many able to get off of inhalers and prescriptions.  I have suggestions for you and her and you can contact me at [email protected].

I am a CF sufferer myself, and I have been lectured and talken to and explained to just how important physical activity is for CF patients. I do squad swimming three times a week, fitness, aerobics and interschool sports and because of my active schedule I am quite healthy. If I ever miss out on my physical activity I can see the difference in myself and my CF. No, physical activity is a must-do for CF sufferers.

Anyone who has CF should most definitly try to be an active person. Swimming, tennis, football, soccor, hockey, basketball, netball, running, high jump, long jump, walking, sprinting, jogging... it's all good. Just as long as it makes you breathless, they it's good for you. When a physical activity makes you breathless, it means that it is working your lungs to an extent that they are breathing even deeper then usual, which means getting air into the spaces that your lungs hardly use. This prevents collapse in your lungs and it's all around great for your health.

And the healthier you feel, then the better attitude you have towards being a CF. If you feel great, then you'll look great and that's what everyone wants.

I agree being active is a key element in a cfer staying heathy. I am a 20 year old and I was very active in highschool I always felt great. once I got into college I didnt join any sports and I have noticed a difference in my breathing. I really need to get back to doing some kind of sport or just run. so let your friend be active and exercise, just tell her to keep an eye on how she is feeling, she is the only one that knows what she can and can not do.
