While in hospital this time, I got mega bored, and also annoyed. The food they are now serving tastes of cardboard. They have took away all salt and sugar and flavour in general. Jam roly poly without sugar in either the sponge or the custard is just wrong beyond words. With taking the sugar out there also removing the fat content. Making each morsal of food we force down our necks even worse, as aswell as tasting yucky, youhave to eat even more of it too get enough calories.
I've found the best thing for us PWCF is the CF kitchen (if your hospital has one) I've found that using ice cream and chocolate and jelly and fruit, you can make quite substantial meals and come out of hospital heavier than when you went in. Does make a bit of a mess though
Cereal:
Frosties are still relatively cheap. There also very versatile, and seem to accept most flavours you add to them. With it just being easter, I have a huge supply of easter eggs, that usually would just get thrown away. I've found though that melting them in the microwave and pouring over frosties and milk is delicious. You can use fruit to add a few vitamins to this aswell. Or use the sweeties you get in the easter eggs, to make an extra special calory filled treat.
Smoothies:
Fruit smoothies are so full of goodness and fun and easy to make. Get a few different fruits add some ice cream or yoghurt and full-fat milk to thin it, put in a blender and set it going. The only fruit I've found don't work well with this are citrus fruits, as it seperates the milk and make your smoothie all lumpy. Pears, kiwis, strawberries, bananas, plums, peaches, apricots, apples all work well though.
Skandishakes or Calshakes:
If you struggle keeping or gaining weight, you usually get prescribed these shakes. There fantastic, and you can doso much with them if you use your imagination. You can increase the fat content, the vitamin content, and also make themless boring, just by adding a couple of different ingrediants to them.
To date I've added-Bananas, strawberry's, gingernut biscuits, jaffa cakes, cinamin, nutmeg, ice cream, choclate spread, peanut butter, jam, jelly, custard, fruitcake, apples, chocolate mousse, strawberry jelly, chocolate cake, golden syrup, mint aero's.
I've made them chocolate-orange flavour, chocmnt flavour, apple and cinamin flavour, toffee banana flavour, blackforest gateau flavour.
You can make ice cream with them aswell as shake, or even mini-milk type ice lolly's if you get the recipe right.
Salad:
Summers coming up soon, and what's nicer on a hot day than a nice crispy salad? But obviously salad isn't known for being the most fatty of foods.......Unless of course, you add stuff to it.
Salad cream is full of calories, eggs, cheese, ceaser salad type dressing. Make the salad along side a small jacket potato, filled with salted butter (well, it's summer, you need the salt!) beans, cheese, cottage cheese, philadephia, tuna/mayo, chicken/sweetcorn/mayo, chicken/pinapple/mayo. Best thing is aswell, is that salad doesn't exactly make you feel bloated. It makes you feel fresh and healthy, no matter what you put on it.
Too add to the vitamins and stuff, experiment with different salady things like carrots, beetroot, beetroot leaves, spinach, springonions, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, add fruit. Apples go well in a salad. Salad does not just mean lettuce!
If your heading to McDonalds and don't fancy something stodgy, opt for one of there salads. The dressings on them are actually higher in calories than the burgers or fries are.
Snack on apples or marshmellows dipped in melted chocolate. Or Nachos with cheese sauce.
If you don't feel like a meal, don't force yourself to eat one. Instead make a high cal shake that you can sip on. Dot high cal snacks around the house, that you can nibble on as your going through the rooms.
I've just managed to pile on 3kg in 8 days eating like this, which is actually like a record for me! Getting weighed each day as helped me aswell, as it's made me even more determined to reach the next kg.
Have fun people! Hope everyone's well!
