Did anyone watch the news last night about depression?

I was just wondering if anyone watched the news last night. I'm not sure what channel it was but it said it had a cure for depression. Just wondering if anyone watched it. If you have please let me know.

I didn't watch the news last night, but sure would be interested in hearing about this, Can you remember what all that they said? Was it a drug, or some kind of therapy?

Fill us in when you get a chance. A cure would be the most wonderful thing in the world. Though I would still want to come here and talk to my friends.

It had something to do with magnetic therapy for the brain..not sure..but im looking to see if i can find it. I think it was channel 5 news. i'll let you know.

Looks like i was right. There is a article on Abc News website and the episode aired on May 17th 2008 about a magnet therapy for people suffering from depression and can not find anything that works. I would post the article but im not sure if i can do that here in this forum.If your interested i can e-mail the article or you can check it out yourself and go to ABC's website. Hope this helps.

I believe it would be okay to post the article. You just can't post anything that has to do with selling. But something that is informative I think would be okay. That way everybody can read it. As long as it isn't really long or anything.

I don't know if this is the same thing as what you all saw, but heard of an actual implant that doctors can put in your brain and it'll get rid of depression also, downside is, it's really expensive... oh well

On a somewhat related note, I saw an interesting documentary called "Does Your Soul Have a Cold" or something like that. It was on Independent Film Channel on cable TV. It was about people in Japan... how they never knew the word "depression" until the drug companies came over there in the 1990s and started peddling drugs for depression.

Some of the people seemed really depressed and cried a lot, but others didn't, in my mind, seem like candidates for drug therapy.

Anyway, look for it on the IFC schedule, they repeat movies a lot. Or maybe it's even in your local library. It had subtitles, but I think Americans made it.

There was an interesting documentary on depression, on PBS last week. It's available for viewing on the PBS.org website. One of the treatments discussed was ketamine. It is expensive, but the patients described feeling as though they have never been depressed. The feeling didn't forever, but it did seem to help the medications become more effective, as though the treament "kick-started" the brain. The magnet thing is called Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and so far it seems to be side effect free and very effective, the problem is that a patient may need to have it every day (in 20 minute sessions) and I think it is only available for people with severe depression, people who would otherwise be having ECT

Interesting........ it does sound expensive and a chance for people that do not respond to all other treatments.
