I know that I need to start counseling. I am on meds for depression/ADHD which are working but I have so many issues that I just need to talk about
to get me through the hard days. I tried it once before and maybe it was the counselor. After three visits I didn't return. I felt as I was telling her my concerns she was looking at me like I was a nut case. I can't even tell you what bothers me because for what is wrong out in the world I should not worry about
what I do. But I worry so much and things bother me so much it is affecting my work day and home life. I am sure what bothers me goes back to when I was younger or how in my mind I wanted my kids to be and they are not. I just can't stand it anymore but I just can't seem to take that step. Also, the co-pays kill my budget which is too bad.

I could have wrote your post It fits me to almost a key .. From this and other places it seems that it may take a few tries to find one that works for you. I am hesitant becasue when I wa in graduate school . I knew about
5 people who were getting their master degree in psychiatry and they were all dealing with some serious stuff themselves. So i can't figurte how they would help me. I guess it is like most professions --there are good and bad. I know that I need help so I will be pursuing this once my kids are back in school I am losing my mind and I really need to figure a way to get a grip on my thinking and worrying Hope you are able to get your self to counseling

I have hired and fired many counselors before I found one that I meshed with and felt safe with. It takes time to build the trust. If you don't feel comfortable with the one you see, don't be afraid to try another. I found it is a lot like the meds. Takes some time to get it right.

Also, feel like when I get there I just cry my way through the hour and feel more stupid. Is that normal? I guess it is better than sitting all day on the verge of tears all the time with a sick stomach.

There is nothing wrong with crying through your session. Hopefully you feel better afterwards. That is what it is all about
, healing. It is healthy to cry. And if that is what it takes to feel better, so be it.
Keep trying, I am sure that with time you will start to feel better. Keep up the good work.
Best wishes,
Karen...

I think starting counseling can be harder than taking the meds. With meds you just take the pill and go on and pray that the side effects are managable. With counseling you have to articulate to someone else what is going on with you, how you are feeling, WHY you are feeling that ect, ect. All of which can be very confusing and intimidating when the person him/herself is probaly confused, anxious and scared as hell about
how they feel. You know, something you don't see in the "literature" very much is that depression is a SCARY thing,,,it scares the bejesus of a person. I tend to freeze up before a therapist session and have tremendous anxiety. Finding a skilled, insightful gifted therapist first time out of the gate is truly a gift from the angels....but by all means start the process, as you do you will gain more confidence in your ability to handle it....I mean just having someone to listen for an hour as you try to sort things out in your head can be helpful. But don't afraid to change therapists.

Suzy
Therapists are human too,and that means that not everyone jives with the other person.
It took me awhile to find the right person that I felt comfortable with and could tell her everything.
If you don't feel like this person is the one, then find someone else...
Whatever you do,don't give up!

Hello there,
Like ShynSassy said, counselor are regular people too. Theres no need to be afraid.
When I first started counseling (im 20) I was TERRIFIED! but you just gotta force yourself to do it-if you feel it's something that will help you, tell yourself that this will help you and honestly, you'll feel better. I'm a very quiet and reserved person and I don't tell anyone anything. Except my counselor. Shes the first one I ever had and immediately had a strong relationship with her. She probably knows more about
me than I do about
myself!!! But anyway, if you had a bad experience in the past, it just means you probably just need to go through a few counselors until you find one you're totally comfortable with. If you're not comfortable with one-it's not worth it then.
Best of luck to you. I benefit greatly from counseling, so I wish you all the best!
