I know exactly how you're feeling.
Once upon a time, a few years ago; I could compete with the most drugged up lab rats on the face of the planet. I was on so much medication that there wasn't much that had anything on me; but that wasn't the answer...at the time I was so high it FELT like it was the answer; but depression became worse, and so did every other problem I was facing.
NOW, I'm off much of the medication, and sleep seems to be something of the past; anxiety runs through my veins; and pain is my best friend...well not really a best friend, more like that friend you can't ever shake...the one that uses you...
Due to my medication - the new doctors for my PM&R are limited on what I can take. Methadone has been a blessing b/c my pain is under control, but many of the other meds I was on were cut off; making insomnia a concern.
One thing that I've found out is that ear plugs seem to help me sleep. They cut down on the noise in my room...snoring, computers, outside noise, etc. and actually make me focus on my heartbeat and breathing - which at times are quite soothing.
Drugs aren't the answer, that much I can tell you is true - but then again, I don't know WHAT the answer is at the moment. I would recommend trying the ear plug idea - I use a kind called "Bio Ears" which are actually synthetic silicon ear plugs...they fit inside the ear canal very easily - and are lightweight; you don't actually even feel like they're in your ears.
It's one thing I would try!
