hello. I am a 14 year old female. since Christmas of 2008, I have been feeling depressed on and off. however, since the end of may it has become increasingly worse, and beginging to become intolerable. I have great supportive parents who love me, but I feel threatened to talk to them about my problems, but I am in severe need of help. if anyone could read my symtoms, and help me to make an unnofficial depression diagnosis, I would be beyond thankful. is there such a thing as night time depression?
symptoms:
1. not currently suicidal, although I constantly think of death
2. takes me hours to fall asleep
3. constantly sad. tolerable during day, intolerable during
night
4. uncontrolable night time depression
5. sad, alone, confused
6. have self mutilated myself by cutting my forearms on 2 separate occasions
7. family problems/ makes depression worse
8. I think about using drugs to make me happy, though I know I won't
9. loss of interest in sports and friends I once enjoyed
10. EXTREME anger and irritability
11. always think about the past
12. difficulty remember things
13. consant headaches and neck pain
14. if it's not sad depression, 85 percent of the time it's feelings of emptiness

Welcome to Healing Well! I am so sorry you are feeling so down. It certainly sounds like you need help to deal with all your problems.

There are a lot of great members here & I'm sure they will be along shortly to offer their support. Unfortunately, depression is a difficult diagnosis to make, even for trained professionals. Here, we are just people who have already been diagnosed with depression. I know it is hard to think about talking with your parents about how you're feeling, but you really do need their help. It sounds like you might be from the U.S., if not please let me know. If that is the case, now is a good time to try to get help. Maybe they could even get you feeling better by the start of the school year. Wouldn't that be great?

You are still pretty young & there are a lot of hormonal changes going on at 14. Please do talk to your parents about getting in to see your doctor. S/he can run some tests to find out is something is going on physically that is causing you to feel like you do. If not, there are a lot of wonderful, caring counselors out there. A lot of people really like their school counselors & feel like they have helped them a lot with their depression. There are many 14-17 year olds on the Forum & I'm sure they will be along shortly to share their experiences.

agree with frances. i was dx with depression at 15, stupid me refused the help and treatment for another year and yes i went down hill savagely. talk to folks and dr. for the past 20 odd yrs i have been severly unwell. many dx's over the years, 28 lenghthy hosp admissions, courses of E.C.T. and a six month inpatient stay at a program for people with severe borderline personality disorder. i understand the self-harm. and why. not here to scare you, just want to inform you that the sooner you receive help, the BETTER the prognosis will be.

You definately should talk to somebody, a school counselor, or your doctor. Depression at this age is hard to handle. You are young and should be happy.

As was stated above, there are many people here your age that post on the forum. And remember we are not professionals, just fellow sufferers. Please do get some help. It is our there, and you definately fall into the catagory of being depressed.

Sorry to here your are suffering with depression.  At your age I would recommend a spiritual approach.  Medication may be a short-term answer but God ( call in what you like) is the only real long term help.

When you get mad and depression take a close look at your thoughts ( the real probem).

The world including the people in your family are doing the best they can.  Assume we are all somewhat insane!  So, do not take things personally.   Do you best to except things as they are now.   Think of it as a divine plan that we just do not understand.  A learning experiance.

I would also recommend exercise... take a jog or walk get out into nature.  When you get out notice the moment... the birds... the sunshine or wind.  Get out of your head and into the beauty of the moment.  Best wishes, I will pray for you.  Remember to love yourself today.

I just wanted to let you know I welcome you here and I agree with the wise members that have posted to you already.  Do trust your parents and talk with them.  You need help and coming here and talking to us is a great first step but you would truly benefit from talking with a professional as well.
