I just moved into a very nice place. It's quiet and everything I like except for some tiny black ants that have moved themselves in. I'm depressed that I might have to get rid of my dove because of her seeds that she likes to fling everywhere. I've had her for 10 years and it would be a shame if I had to get rid of her. I tell my son not to leave dishes out in the living room or in his room. I don't want these little buggers anywhere else in my apartment. My cats love the new place because they can actually watch the birds out the windows and not fall off the sill.

Hi Hara,

Your new place sounds nice. Have you ever tried that Terro ant killer? It is a sticky sweet substance that they carry to the nest and all of them die. I use it every summer. I always get ants in the house. But I have to put it in a safe place where the dogs can't get it. Being it is sweet, I am afraid that they might eat it. Give that a go and see how it is. I would hate to see you have to get rid of your dove. So I hope that all works out for you.

we have a permanant ant colony at our house, they live in the fondation so their is no getting rid of them here but if you cover all the food and are really careful as well as trying the ant killer than they normaly are not to bad, your new place sounds lovely and i wish you luck

I've been looking around on the internet as well. They don't like being disturbed either. So, the other day a washed the concrete slab I have for a patio out back. I think that's where they are coming from also.

Hi Hara,

Just A little something to try with your ant problem, Can you see where they are coming in from? If you can, Put boiling hot water into the hole, or put some strong blench in the hole that will kill them.  Other wise DLY shops will sell ant killer in power and gel which you can put down the hole.

Hope this helps and works for you, It would be a great shame to have to get rid of your dove just because of the pesty ants. Good luck with this, and enjoy your new place.

Thanks Lee, Well my landlord put down some more ant stuff on my floor between the livingroom and the kitchen. And the little suckers came out after a few minutes like you would not believe. There must have been at least 25-50 of them. It looked like I hadn't scrubbed my floor in just that corner. I also had him put some of that stuff up on one of my counters by my stove in the kitchen. Those little ants in the kitchen look almost invissible....like see through.

I'm not sure how much more of this I can handle. The landlord said the ant thing is really bad this year because we didn't really have a winter to kill some things off, but he's trying to help to.

My apartment has almost everything new in it. I'm pretty happy with it otherthan the ant problem.  I have to keep checking my cats food to make sure there are no ants there. And I have been vaccuming there spot every day since I found the little black roommates.

HARA - Great I have a mental evaluation Friday for SSI and I have ants which are driving me nuts. Do you think I might get SSI just from this little problem? I'm not telling them a thing.turn

Well I got through my Mental evaluation and the ants are gone for now.

Now DSHS is saying that they are going to cut me off of cash and medical assistance for some reason the gave as "we don't know where you are at." Well, I know where I'm at and so do they... dumb people. I'm doing what I'm suppose to be doing for them and my SSI worker. I really don't think I can take much more.

HARA - Diabetes, Depression/Anxiety, Fibromyalgia, Sleep Apnea, Vitamin D- deficantcy, DDD, Arthritis, Tention headaches, there's more but I can't remember.

Well that really sucks. I can't see where they can get away with this. Is there somebody that you could talk to about this? You definately have an address, I can't see where they think you don't. I hope that you get this straightened out soon.

I have a name and I will get a number on Monday when I go to turn in my paperwork to the DSHS office. I'm not happy and I'm going to raise Cane and then raise Able. Hell might be after that but it's going to be much more work...:-)

I tenically don't have to have my paperwork in until the 25th of March to DSHS. I hope I get SSI. I so can't wait until April 28th.

keep at em'. wishing you well with it. always keep copies. these buggers like to advise that information has been lost-a stalling technique. or that it went to the wrong dept, etc. with compassion, jamie.

I've been really depressed today been sleeping alot today, plus my power went out for about 6 hours today. That pissed me off because all my icecream melted and all my food unthawed.

OK, after 4 hours sitting in the DSHS office I finally got things straightened out. Thank God.

My blood pressure was 155/97 with a heartrate of 116. /Both way to high for me. I'm going to go lay down now and try and rest a bit before my Work First Social worker calls me.  Phewwwwww  I'll smile tomorrow. Right now I can hardly type this because of everything today.

it is done, the hard bit, good on you for holding firm!! even though my social security dept is different it is also similar, that is you have to stand up and be known and counted!! you did this, and i hope many of you who read hara's post can be inspired and motivated to stand up and be counted when you are asking for, and when you are pleading for assistance. i take inspiration from you hara, well done, cheers to you, jamie.

Thanks Jamiee, I slept for 5 hours yesterday which made it hard to sleep that night. My medical social worker called to go over my medical paperwork that l turned in yesterday. He said it just looks like I'm going to be doing community service which is fine with me. So he's going to call me next week and get the ball rolling.

cry I was so depressed over the weekend. DSHS sent me Eligability Review form and said that I stated that I had a husband that was back in the home. I called and ripped them up one side and down the other. Then I asked about my medical insurance. I found out that my Cymbalta is going to cost me around 189.00 dollars. It's ok for now. The state has messed up my medical insurance so badly I'm just going to pay for it this month only because I'll have a new membership number this next month. At least it wasn't as much as I though it would be and that amount is coming from Safeway Pharmacy.shocked

 

But it's ok. My poor laptop gave up the ghost after only being hooked up to the internet for 2 years. My battery is totally dead, my mouse pad is not working and the guy on the phone today stated me a price of 499.99 or so to fix it. I told him I would get another one and to just send it back to me.

sorry about your computer hara. since you are on the books with dshs maybe since the stuff is not yours you may qualify to receive it cheaper, re:your local mental health clinic? i have no idea, just throwing some ideas your way. keep well, here for you, jamie.

Oh Hara! I am so sorry that you're having to go thru all of this...I wish I could help! :(
But let me say this: PLEASE do not get rid of your dove! If you do, you will regret it. How do I know? Well, I have been on disability since 1994 because of depression/anxiety. In 1996, I got 2 cockatiels from my sister because my niece was not caring for them properly. I took care of them for over 2 years and loved them dearly! After my dad died, Mom and I had to move into an apartment and thoughtit would be hard with 2 birds. I thought I could give them away to a good home...so I did...it lasted for about 2 hours! I got all panicky and depressed. I was crying like a baby! I called the lady that had accepted my birds and was crying shamelessly over the phone! She kindly agreed to let me come back and get them! My mom was aggravated and embarrassed by my behavior, but she didn't want me to go back into a depressive spiral! When I got to the lady's house, she had already put all of her birds "to bed", that is, put covers over their cages for the night. My birds were not used to that at all! When I raised the cover up from off their cage, they looked at me like "What were you thinking?!!!" Once Mom and I got back to the car with my "babies", even she admitted she was glad to have them back! LOL!
My female tiel died in 2006 and it was painful to lose her. My male tiel is still with me and brightens my days. Even if it meant fighting ants or alligators, I could never let him go. When he dies, I'll have the comfort of knowing that he's not in an unfamiliar place and scared. I think your dove would miss you terribly if you got rid of it.
I hope you aren't mad at me for saying all of this. I just know that it's hard for the pet owner and the pet in cases like these. You are sweet to give that little dove a good home!

My last house was infested with fire ants. They actually built nests under my daughter's bed, in my cabinets, and in my bedroom...complete with eggs and queens crawling all over. They were relentless both in the fact that we couldn't get rid of them and in that they bit and stung me and my kids in our sleep (and any other chance they could get).

The only advice I have to give is try to find the area they're coming in from and sealing it. Our ants were coming in through cracks in the walls and along the floor boards, so I had to re-caulk the entire house (by that time it was too late though, the house was falling apart, yay for military housing that's 60 years old and made of cinderblock).
