I am a 41 year old male who has suffered from depression for 15 years. I have taken all the anti depressants with little success. As of now I am taking Abilify, lexapro, and remeron. I still don't feel good. I never smile and when I do it is fake. Nothing is funny to me. Others laugh at things and I just sit there. I have a loving supportive wife and two sons. I work on the farm for my cousin and it is hard because i feel so bad all the time. I have applied for disability but know that it won't support my family. What I DON"T understand is why my mother and my friends never call or ask how my depression is going?????? Do others have this problem? People either don't realize how sick i am or they don't have time for me. My friends know I have depression but they never ask how i am doing????? Why do we have to be alone? What do I have to do to get it through their heads that my depression is not getting any better and I need their support??? THanks for any advice.........

sorry that this is happening, sadly i am getting the same. not visits when the dirty black dog is esculating. people are worried about saying the wrong thing, worried that we will loose it in front of them, etc. that is why they stay away, and for some they themselves can't deal with mates whom are unwell. this goes back to education. we, you need to educate them about depression, and that you are not going to loose it, for they feel they are jepordising their relationship with you if they come around-what they NEED to learn is that this is the reason why we get upset with them. i hope you feel better real soon. sending healing prayers your way. with compassion, jamie. ps you have been strong in posting your situation, keep being strong JDK. jamie.

Hi JDK,

I have been taking abilify for a while and it really helps me. How long have you been on it?

I understand how you feel. Though when I am depressed, I don't feel like being around people at all. So I guess that I am different there. I have very few friends, but I am happy with that.

I hope that you feel better soon.

Keep posting, it is good therapy.

I've been taking Abilify for about a year and a half. It seemed to work really well when I first began taking it and I guess it still helps since when I stop it for a day or two I start feeling worse. I wish I didn't have to take it because of the expense..

Abilify is expensive. I have insurance, but I still have to pay quite a bit for it. But it helps so much, that it is worth it. Sometimes if you contact the manufacturer you will find they will give you samples or a discount. Check them out and see if they will help you. I understant that B M Squibb U. S. makes it, I have never heard of them giving discounts, but you could always try.

I am sure that it is helping you some. Maybe you need a higher dose. I would talk to the doctor about it.

I hate to hear of all the meds people are taking... I am starting a new journey with some neurofeedback training - - this has proven to "retrain the brain" - help the brain correct itself so that people can be off medication! It is the bodies natural way of healing. Please look into this as an alternative option. I have learned that most people are over-medicated, and meds can actually amplify the problems you're having. Did you ever pay attention to the side effects Abilify says aloud on their commercial? it's insane! It is not natural for us to live our lives taking these meds and upping the dosage each year to keep up with changes or further depression, etc. Just not natural.

Yes a lot of us do. That is the only way that we can function. Though I am glad that your method works for you. Please, nobody go off meds unless discussing it with your doctor first.

Also new member ,would great appreciate some thoughts on Lamictal.

~~I am on week (three) and am having great anxiety about this med. I am a very creative person (a writer) photographer and gardener. I can put together an "occasion" (parties,holidays,etc) But this past winter was the worst depressive episode ever. I already take Cymbalta & alprazolam. I have a great therapist, who finally got me to "try" lamictal.

~~I would like to hear from you-on the positives of accepting your condition,and dealing with it. This time I'm so concerned about my level of depression & stuff. So many variables for me,including a hysterectomy 10 years ago.

Hope I've found a "good' place here!

My apologies, I never meant that medicine is not helpful or good - - and I also certainly do not advocate going off meds without doctor approval. My husband did that with very bad effects, so I understand that too. I am grateful for medicine and am not into 'new age' treatments. I just wanted to offer advice on an alternate option. Thanks for understanding. Sorry if I offended!
