hey folks,

i've been feeling really down lately.  not sure if it's my depression or a mid life crisis.  i'm a 37 year old stay at home mom.  don't have a social life, don't have any hobbies, don't really have any friends i can talk to.  sitting here crying right now.  any suggestions??

When your feeling down get up and do something you like to do.  Take a walk,  listen to music,  watch a funny DVD, look into taking a class to learn a hobby, anything but don't just lay down and stay down for the day.  It is alright to get the tears out and then move on. 

Watch funny videos on You Tube or your favorite artists. :-)

Kitt is right, find something to distract yourself from your mood. This can be done. Even if you do quiet things like meditation or yoga. I think we all have the power of the mind, we just don't know it. Or how to use it. Not saying that is all it takes, it isn't. There is medications, and counseling. Allow yourself to feel sad. That is normal at times. If you do go to bed, don't beat yourself up over it. But try to get out for a walk the next day. Even if it is just for a few minutes, it will make you feel better. You might want to consider taking some vitamin D3. It puts you into a better mood by giving you what the sun would give you. It really helps me. You might want your doc to do blood work to see if you are low first. Another good thing about it is that it is inexpensive. So talk to your doc about that.

what helps me, even in massive pain, is walking. hoping you feel better real soon.

I'm no expert, but, what everyone has told you about staying active is true. 

And, sometimes it helps to know someone is listening and they really care.

There are wonderful people at your fingertips in these forums.

When was the last time you had a full physical? Blood and all that? Sometimes we get so used to the yearly gyn/pap/mammo, that we neglect the general health. My GP is now looking at my vit D as often as anything else. Apparently, vit D levels for most people are inadquate, since we don't get out in the sun much. Simple fix, and there are other things they can check like your thryroid and other hormones. Have heard some amazing stories about the vit D, one right here on our forum.

Are you able to force yourself to get involved in something with the kids, Brownie co-leader, school room helper, something not etched in stone, but that you can chose to get out and do. Do you feel better if you go out to lunch with someone? I usually fight that, since I can get a "fre" lunch at home everyday, but when I do give in and go out, wow, feel kinda better.

Can't always manage this, but often force myself to smile and exchange pleasantries with cashiers, person behind me in line, just see what opportunity there is to make a little chit-chat. Often feel so withdrawn, and it helps a little when I can say to myself, see, that wasn't so bad, you can talk to other people when you want to.

Sun and fresh air are important, take a couple breathers during the day, a short walk, sit on your porch if you have one.

While you have some strength, do what you can.

Could be that the GP will give you an anti-depressant. Run with it !
