You all know that the hurricane Irene is to deliver a blow to the

Eastern Seaboard tonight and tomorrow, moving up the Coast to

New England later Sunday.

We lived in a small sea-faring village in Virginia years ago, so the

residents there are fully acquainted with what to do to prepare for

storms at sea that blow into the area as northeasterly rain and winds.

 

One of our neighbors stood on the second floor of his home and

dropped a line down the outside wall of his house to measure the

depth of the water from the hurricane that had hit.  His rope accidentally fell into his open well. 

His wife called upstairs and said, "how deep is the water now?"  He responded, "I don't know; she's measuring 5 fathoms  (25 feet) and still going!"

True story.   We hope everyone on the East Coast survives and recovers quickly.

Hi, It's Genetic. That's a really cute story! Where are you living now? Will you still be in the hurricane's path?

I live in New England (Connecticut to be exact). And the weathermen are predicting that it will hit us Sunday morning. Their predictions about how much rain and wind keep on changing. But what I am most worried about is my "formerly" gravel driveway. It's over 600 feet and each time it rains (we have had some serious storms) more washes away. I'm just hoping there will be something left and it will still be passable.

Hi, Cass,

We're in the piedmont region of North Carolina, about 25 miles southwest of Raleigh.

I hope you folks won't be hit hard by the storm; it should be much
less serious by the time it reaches you. You keep dry and safe, too,
please.

Let us know how you fared after it's over, won't you?

I live in passaic county nj and I'm very afraid of the hurricane and especially that I suffer from anxiety I'm already so nervous.. I just hope everything comes out good.

You should get some rain and wind, BaByGaBe, but it's going to become
weaker as it travels up the coast so try to relax and enjoy what's left of it when it reaches New Jersey.

Stay Dry and comfortable and hope the rain is good for your lawn.

I do hope and think you'll be fine.

Ok....the first effects of Hurricane Irene are starting to be felt in Connecticut right now. I wasn't nervous before, but I'm really getting nervous now. I have lots of trees around my house and they are talking about sustained winds of 65 mph. Maybe it's just listening to the news but it feels awfully real at the moment.

They just said on the news 50/50 probability of losing power at the moment and if we do it will be for awhile.

I hope everyone else who is in its path stays safe.

Hi Cass,

I hope you get through the hurricane without too many problems. I know what it is like to have to worry about your power. We had a number of bad storms this summer but nothing like hurricane winds and I lost my power 3 times, the first time for 4 days in a row. Lost all my food. But what can you do.

I am praying you and all the others in the path of the storm come out of this without any signigicant damage. Stay as calm as you can and keep away from the windows!

We are watching  here for you folks.

 It came inland more than weatherforecasters think probably. The winds are down, though, aren't they?

Records of 100 were recorded here early along the coast but dropped to 85 mph before leaving N.C. Haven't heard from my sister in
Richmond, Va., but think it must be okay there since she hasn't communicated.

Take care; it will pass by soon; sustained winds of 65 won't last long

if the storm is still  moving over land.  It can build force only if it goes back out to sea to regain strength.  I know that's not very encouraging, but 65 mph winds are not hurricane force, so you may save your trees.  I know how you feel and will say a prayer after this note for your safety and protection.

Hi, It's Genetic and Aurora: Thanks for the quick replies back and well-wishes. For now I have shut off my tv. I wasn't overly worried (as I am prepared) until all the schools around here cancelled our first day of school for Monday. I think I'll wait a few hours before I turn it on again.

I'm still worried but i have my light on ac on and tv very loud I don't wanna hear whats going on outside, I don't even know if it hit north jersey yet. But to all in the storm be careful.

I am hoping that everything is getting better ad that the hurricane is losing strength. I hope you all are safe and sound. Keep us posted.

I hope by this time, the storm has passed by and you aren't having any problems.

I live on the Jersey Shore and the past cpl of days have been very stressful. I have the river right down the street and the ocean is blocks away. The barrier island was evacuated, but we weren't. We got hit w/ lots of rain, many of my shrubs/plants were flattened from the winds. But our streets are passable, and our basement is dry.

We have a power wire down at the corner - we are 2 houses from the corner. I called 911 and they said it may take days to get to it, as a lot of wires are down in our area. We have power, no flooding of the area, and everyone is safe!  We are blessed.

Now, I have to 'put' all my stuff away that I have in my emergency 'GO' bags. It will take most of today to finish, but I prefer this to the alternative.

I pray that at the end of this day, we will ALL be save in our homes.

Wonderful posts. Thank you all for keeping us informed. We have
been concerned about you and feel that you all have been brave
and courageous womenfolk. I know the men have been supportive,
too.

You can probably unpack all your "go" bags now and settle in for a
little cleaning up of the lawn next week.

Hi Everyone. Alice I'm glad you're safe from the flooding. The storm is still going full force here. I lost my electricity at 7:30 this morning and have limited battery left here on my computer. Many trees have come down and one huge branch just dropped and missed house as I was writing.

I also have fallen trees across the top of my 600 foot driveway. We're fine in house..thank god....but this is unbelievable.

Stay inside and stay safe everyone!

Please stay safe everybody. I know by the time it gets to me, it will only be rain and wind. I expect that in a couple of days. I am in Michigan, so we are way inland, but we often get terrential rains during hurricane season. I am glad you are all safe.

Hi Cass,

We had a 60ft Cedar tree land on our house in a snow storm in Jan '87, that was so frightening. I am so glad the branch didn't hit your home. It is frightening just to hear that 'THUMP' as it hits the ground.

Do you have enough water and canned foods to last you a few days? Hopefully, the power will be back on soon.

If you aren't able to be on the computer, pls know I will continue to keep ALL of you in my prayers, that by tomorrow this is nothing more than an inconvenience. We will get thru this, we ARE strong!

You can say that, again, Alice. You are all brave and strong.
Prayers still going out for your relief in this situation and restoration
of power and a short and easy cleanup ahead this week.

When you regain your power, let us know, please, Cass. Will you and
your husband try to clean the limb from your property or will you need
to call for professional tree people to come and help? My husband
was an industrial engineer so he knew all about cutting dangerous
trees away from the home site, and we did that on a couple of occasions. Maybe you might want to do some of that, too, later on
in the season. It really relieves your concern when strong weather
threatens. Please be careful.

I'm glad everyone ok, overherebin northern nj it stopped raining this morning I drove around my area and alot of places are flooded and now the wind is starting to pick up around and the sun comes out and hides again lol.. But the storm wasn't that bad thank you god.

Just let's see what happen later on.

Hi Everyone: I'm using my battery very sparingly on my computer at the moment. The storm is over (finally!). My wonderful neighbor came over and sawed the tree that was blocking my driveway away.

Basically, 99% of the schools in the state are cancelled tomorrow. The one I work at part-time has not closed. It is 50 mts away from me under normal circumstances. I'm going to try to go tomorrow...we'll see if I can get there. All power lines are down around house. It will be interesting.

Other than that, we are all without power in my town and towns around me. They are saying it could be 3-4 days. And all my down trees are outside / away from the house so we're okay.

I'll check in occassionally. Hope everyone else is doing well too.

Although some have had an unhappy ending to this, all of us who have
kept in touch seem to have been fortunate. I'm so glad that all of
you are able to get out and do the things you would like to do. I'm
hoping that your power will be restored sooner than expected, Cass.

My sister in Richmond is great, played bridge yesterday and won first
place. Good for her. My daughter and son-in-law's condo at the beach wasn't damaged in any way, and all I have to do is have the small limbs in my backyard removed.

New York seems to have fared better than expected, too. Let's hope
all are safe, dry, and comfortable tonight.

Take care everyone, keep us posted on how things are.
