zoloft and weight gain

I'm SO relieved that I found this forum! I have been on zoloft now for probably around 18-months-2 yrs. I went on it for anxiety and depression when I was going through allot of tragedy in my life. I slowly started putting on weight which I almost didn't recongise at first. In the last 6 months I have put on approximately 12 kgs. I am currently weighing 75kg- my normal weight is between 58-60. being only 5'3, this has made a HUGE difference to how I feel about myself and also how I look. My clothes don't fit anymore and I have constant comments/digs from my family about the weight gain. I have decided also to go off the drug and have started weaning myself off it today-going from 50mg to 25mg. I'll try this for a wk and then stop taking it all together.

has anyone else recently had success losing the weight after stopping zoloft?

I have also upped the exercise routine and eating healthily and have felt very depressed when I have weighed myself and nothing has changed :(

Welcome to the HealingWell Depression forum. I didn't have weight gain from zoloft, just the opposite. But many have gained wieght on it. I think once you are off of it that it will be easier to lose weight, but it may be slow. If you are lucky it will go faster. Be careful on going off. Does your doctor know that you are tapering off? If not, I suggest you let them know so that they can help you.

There are other meds that don't cause weight gain and one of them is welbutrin. In fact some people lose weight when they go on it. So keep that in mind if the depression comes back.

I am just reading all these posts and have decided to go off zoloft.  I don't take a high dose but boy have I gained wt over the past 2 yrs.  I plan on weaning myself off, doing it right.  Will hope for the best and I will keep posting updates.

Please do consult your doctor and let them know that you want to go off of zoloft. They can help you taper off slowly, or even change your medication to something that wont cause you to gain weight.

not on zoloft was on it briefly many many years ago, became, well lets just say dangerous to myself on it. am tapering of a medication that has caused massive issues, incl massive, massive weight gain (seroquel) and i am tapering under the instructions of my shrink. have lost 8 kilos. keep well all, with healing compassion to you all. jamie

I have also heard that Welbutrin is a great substitute...

Welcome to the depression forum. You may not like yourself skinny now, but you will fill out. and when you get older, you will wish you were skinny again, At least that is what happened to me. Are you eating properly? Maybe taking vitamins would help. But if you are like me, trust me, you will gain the weight as you get older. I filled out in my 30's and felt pretty good about myself. In my 40's I got fibromyalgia and wasn't as active and gained weight. I am presently losing. Not fast, but I am losing. Feeling better about myself.
