I was told a couple years ago that I probably had BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder) and that DBT might work for me. I saw a counselor (she wasn't an MD or Ph.D or anything) once a week and supplemented that with a weekly three hour group meeting on another night. I did this for about nine months, but I didn't really see any difference in how I felt. To be fair, it didn't make things worse either. My problem with my specific arrangement was that my DBT counselor couldn't prescribe meds. It made dealing with insurance more complicated, and I never really felt fully supported by anyone whose job it was to help me. My drugs came from a woman I only saw for ten minutes a week, and everything she knew about me came from what I told her and not a medical file. This is my long-winded way of saying that I didn't personally find anything therapeutic in DBT and that for me it was a giant waste of time, but that at the same time it didn't hurt anything. Give it a go - see what happens.
