Does weight gain reverse after stopping Sertraline

Hello all

I have just joined this forum as I don't seam to be able to find any answers to my question above .

I have read many posts on this forum and others also regarding weight gain on Sertraline.
I have been on these since end of December 2011. I took 50 mg for one month and start the second week of the forth month tomorrow of 100 mg. (18wks)

I have gained 7lbs in that short period of time .

My reason for this post is is there anyone here who when withdrawing from Sertraline completely reverted back to their original weight .

I have always been able to eat anything I wanted and never gained weight at this rate ,so if you had the same problem or know anyone else who did and you or they reverted can you let me know :)

HI there,

Welcome to the depression forum. I always was skinny as a rail until I got into my 30's. So I am wondering how old you are... Sometimes age and lifestyle causes us to gain weight easier. So we want to make sure it is the medication before you make any changes. Certain times of the month we hold water and weigh more. Just before your menstral cycle, if you are a woman.

I don't know about sertraline, but I know other meds when stopped people lose weight. But it is usually gradual anyway. See if there are things that you can do to combat the weight gain before you stop the medication. Maybe walking, change of eating habits. There are other things you can do. I myself was on prozac for awhile and I could just look at food and gain weight. The weight came off when I switched medications. So that could be an option. Wellbutrin is known for weight loss. Talk to your doctor about it.

Yes i am female , and my age is 45.  I can confirm from recent blood tests that  i am not pre menopausal and dont have periods due to a thermal oblation procedure , which was done april last year ,at the same time i was also sterilised . I have also wondered if weight gain is to do with these 2 additional changes .

I have to go to the doctors next week and will discuss both meds and operations for the  causes of weight gain .

As i was only put on these for a 6 month period i surely need to ween of these shortly anyway ?

It could be a combination of many things. And it could be due to the medication too. I would talk to the doctor about it, as gaining weight can make us more depressed. It did with me and the prozac. I have been taking pristiq and don't have any weight problems due to the medication. I have fibromyalgia and did gain weight from inactivity. But I am slowly losing it. I do walk a lot and drink a lot of water. Eliminated soda (almost, I do cheat now and then and have one) for the most part. Changes in life style and the way we eat can help. Is the medication helping at all with the depression?

I might try these pills just to put some weight on, to skinny at the moment

I have being on sertraline about 8 months now. I started on 50 then up to 100. I am 5 ft 7 and was 10 stone when I started sertraline. I'm now 12 stone and very upset by the weight gain. I was on prosac before but it made me want to sleep all the time. On the sertraline I don't need to sleep during the day and feel much better. It's just the weight gain. I am now over weight and don't want to gain any more but I also don't want to feel like I did before I started sertraline. My husband says he much prefers me happy now and bigger than thin and depressed but I just can't accept the weight gain. One good thing is I now have boobs. Gone from A cup to C cup. I have never had boobs before. Just wish I didn't have the belly to match. For me I guess it's a case of plump and mentally happy or skinny and a wreck xxx

Talk to your doctor about wellbutrin. It doesn't cause weight gain. But there could be other factors involved such as your age. When we hit our 30's we change. Also activity and what you eat. I feel I have gained some weight from medication, but I am happy now, so I live with it. I am losing some now because of walking.

I am glad you are feeling better regarding the depression.
