My dr. switched me from 20mg to 40mg. I'm scared I'm going to go crazy. Anyone else out there try that high a dosage, and if so what happened to you? Thanks....

I'm sorry Leeza,

I couldn't take Paxil even in a small dose. But if your doctor has prescribed it and you are ok on the smaller dose, then go up in dose gradually. If you still have plenty of the 20 mg. tabs (and they aren't time released) then break some in half and take 1 and 1/2 one day and 1 the next and 1 and 1/2 the following day, etc. After you overcome any side affects (if any), then start taking 1 1/2 every day. Then go to 2 one day and 1 1/2 the next day and then go all the way to 2 a day and then you can go on to the 40 mg. pill.

Does that sound less frightening?

yeah that does sound easier. I took it first thing this morning and I'm surprised I was still awake while putting my kids on the bus. It knocked me the heck out!!!! I'm scared though that I'll become some kind of raving lunatic thats just like blahhh blahhh blahhh. I knew this woman who used to be shy and I bumped into her at a store, omg she told me her whole life story practically and told me she was on antidepressants and feels much better. I'm like gosh, these doctors prescribe these medications they don't think about innocent bystanders that have to listen to people on high doses of certain antidepressents who can't stop blabbing. It really was nice to hear she was feeling better, I just didn't expect to be subjected to a 2-hour sob story from someone I hardly even knew

It gave me the most odd, tense feeling. Like, I wanted to grip the steering wheel real hard. I don't remember it making me sleepy . . . but I was already suffering from fatigue. Ya, its amazing how each of us tolerates a different type of anti-d. I have finally settled in with lexapro. But each of us is so different.

wow. I guess for me its opposite. I put my kids on the bus and slept, when they came back I fixed them lunch and for their naptime we all slept (again!) I just woke up I can't seem to stay awake.

I have never been on paxil but my mom is on 40mg and she has no problems.But just because one don't doesen't mean that the next one will.Let us know how you do on that dosage.

well yesterday I was in Never Never land all day, it was like I was floating through fog all day. My kids loved it though they were partying like it was 1999.....I'm planning on taking my next dose at night this time!!!!

As one who just switched off Paxil because it was not working for me as well as it use to, when discussing the alternatives with my Dr. he pulled out the old formulary and read the max. dose of Paxil is 80 mg. but the max. preferred dose is 60 mg.

somehow its comforting to know I'm not at the maximum dose(!!) how long did it take for Paxil to stop working for you cheer dad?

It did not really stop working but it was more not giving me as much as it did when I first started it. I was on it for almost 2 years before switching just 2 weeks ago. We did talk about going up to the 60 mg but I asked to try something different rather than just upping the dose.

I am on 40mg of Paxil right now and I take it at 7:30-8pm and I fall asleep really nice at about 9:30-10pm. I sleep all night and I wake up refreshed. If it makes yo tired, take it at night so you can sleep it off.

What is everyone taking it for? Is it helping?

agoraphobia, feelings of everyone watching me and judging me, panic attacks, the worst part is the "crazy-single-mom disorder". I don't know if its helping its so far making me care less about the fact that I don't like to go out and I don't have friends, I feel like when I go out my panic attacks have actually been getting worse I'm so afraid of looking at people. I feel like I'm 12.

Please notice that you have friends. Look at all who answered here. Besides the meds, are you in talk-therapy? I know that it has been a vital part of my recovery.

I am but like I said it's making me complacant about things, you know I'm realizing I've always been like this since I was a kid, so even though my counselor puts out all these disorders I don't think it's any disorder. I'm just shy, you know, meds don't change that. Some days are good some days I want to put on the invisibility cloak, you know? OK most days I want to put on the invisibility cloak!
