Hello everybody,
I am very new here, i just sign in. I am an international student in the USA. I am really depressed, homesick and down. I went to psychiatrist 9th of Jan. and he prescribed me escitalopram 10 mg and Xanax 0.25 mg. After 4 days of taking escitalopram 10 mg, my side effects vomiting and severe nausea my dr. increased my dose to 5mg after 2 weeks taking that my dr recomended to increase the dose 10 mg again. Today is my 6th day in full dose. Last few days few hours I felt ok. But today I feel awful again. I can not stay my own apartment alone, i just wanna be with people around me. i have to study i dont have any motivation. I was very positive person, laugh easy, enjoy the life right now I am opposite. I am thinking I wont be able to graduate ( I have one more year to go in school) My mom and her side of family suffered from depression but they all healed. She is telling me hanging there and take my medicine regularly and trust my doctor. I can not stop reading forums. Also I dont have any appetite, my dr. thinks its not about the medicine. I dont know what to do ???

Give the medication time to get stabilized in your system, if by then it doesn't work, it will be time to try something different. It takes six to eight weeks for the meds to reach their full effect.

Dont worry about not graduating. You will graduate. Do you go to see a counselor? I think a school counselor would help you. Either that or a regular therapist. They can help you to set goals for getting better. Do work with the doctor. Do take the meds as prescribed. It just takes a lilttle while to get through the side effects and see if it is actually going to help you.

Reading forums can be good. You can see how other people feel. Just remember that different people react differently to different medications. So what one person experiences, doesn't mean you will.

Thank you for your reply Karen. I really appreciate it. I think I am being impatient but dealing with this by myself is really difficult. Also not be able to eat is frustrating. Is there any way to understand this medicine is gonna work or not ?

Usually after about six weeks you will know iff it is going to work or not. I hope that it works for you. You could start feeling better before that which is always great...

Being impatient can often be our own downfall. Like getting by said, give the meds some time to kick in and stabilize in your system. Meds aren't always meant to work immediately and sometimes you get the side effects before you get the relief. 0.25mg seems like kind of a low dose, but I'm no doctor.

The people on the boards here are really friendly and supportive so you'll always have a helping hand here when you need it.

Good morning everybody.
I am wondering can I take xanax quite often till escitalopram kick in or should I keep my self away from it as much as possible ?

Take the xanax, as prescribed. If you are feeling more anxious, let your doctor know. Always let the doctor know what is going on. Xanax is generally taken three times a day... But don't go over what your doc prescribed without asking them about it.

Today is the seventh day in full dose, and third week in this medice. I still don't have appetite. When should it come back ? I lost almost 20 pounds. I am worrying :(

I think this is something that you should address with your doctor. Maybe you should try drinking a shake or something. Don't let yourself get dehydrated either. Drink a lot of water too. But do talk to your doctor. They would know more about if this is normal. Plus it is important that they know when you lose a large amount of weight in such a short period of time. Just to be safe.

He added remeron and he told me hanging there, I set therapist appointment on Monday at school, thank you Karen

Welcome to the forum!

some suggestions to help you feel better. Push the amount water you drink. These medications can dehydrate a person and causes the nausea. Lots and lots of water. Very important.

At the time you take the medication, eat at least one yogurt to coat the stomach. Never take the medication on an empty stomach.

Ginger tea, mint tea or gingerale will help settle the stomach.

You are not alone in this situation. I was there too. Medicines helped. I had similar problems first 8 weeks of medicines (Zoloft - generic Sertralin, and Xanax helped me). Keep up the spirit, go out and run (easy to advise, I know).. and visit Healingwell as often as you need to and post your progress. All of us are eager to see you get well..

Dear Bob,
My doctor wanted to prescribe me to my mom's medicine bcoz he thought if something worked for her most likely to work for me after I took my first remeron two nights ago my appetite came back next morning, I slept well, I am kind of feeling ok. Also I finished third week with lexapro. Maybe placebo I don't know but I am much better. I started functioning again. I ll update all my experience here. I really wanna support other people here who suffer from depression bcoz positive comments help encourage others.

I was feeling great since my Dr add remeron, Monday I went to therapy Wednesday I started work out, my appetite was back everything was normal I just felt like myself again, I told myself that's it ,,, its over but today I woke up down big hole inside me again, no appetite, you think its normal to feel like that ? It means the medicine is not working or something ? By the way today is lexapro 10 mg two weeks, remeron 7.5 mg a week. Tomorrow I ll go up 15 mg with remeron ,,, pls tell me its ok

I am sure that it is. Trust your doctor. If it isn't right, you can always try something else. It is hard sometimes finding the right cocktail. But it can be done. Have patience and know that if just takes time..

hang in there, it will be ok.

Know that medications can only do much; maybe 50%. The rest has to come from us, inside and out with skills and life changes.

Talk to your Therapist about Dialectiable Behavior therapy and mindfulness skills. They are a wonderful addition to help with depression.

Also, depression is a roller coaster ride with ups and downs, we all experience them. Just hold on and ride the wave!
