I'm feeling depressed. I'm 24 and still living with my parents because I'm finishing my college degree. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find a job to save my life. All I want to do is finish my degree, find a job, move out, get married and start living my life like it's my own. I'm so tired of being stuck in this middle area where I feel like I'm not doing anything productive. It just seems like no matter what I do, it doesn't make a difference.

Hi Sad Face,

Welcome to the depression forum. I am happy that you have joined us. You will get support and maybe some suggestions here.

All I can really suggest is taking life one day at a time. It really helps. You will find a job, and you will be able to find a place and move out and start a life. But don't take these times for granted. You are fortunate right now to have a place to stay while you are getting your life together. It doesn't happen over night, but will probably happen before you know it... Keep your chin up. Things will get better.

Hey 1989,

My brother already has a kid and he's 23. Now don't get me wrong, his family isn't exactly that 'already settled down' kinda type of a family. Truth is, his family is kind of hectic. He just finished Uni last year but he's still not working yet. All I'm trying to say is just take things slowly. Take one step at a time and I'm sure you'll make it there. Sure my bro's not working yet but he will soon. Slowly, he will have that perfect job that he wants and you will too.
Concentrate on your degree first then start chasing your dreams. After that, slowly make that progress a little deeper like chasing your dream job. There's nothing to be ashamed of in this generation; it's perfectly normal.

You should be commended for your insightful analysis of your present life. You are very young and all your problems will pass in the blink of an eye.
It is helpful to do some paid part -time work and definitely start doing regular exercise every day.

Say, go for an hours walk or 30 min run each day - this will refresh you physically and mentally.

Sad Face, it's great that you are looking forward to finishing school and being on your own. That's what adults do, so your parents have raised you well. I'm sure you have friends who are further along in that process, but sometimes you just have to do the next right thing ~ and for you that's probably finishing your classes well. Fatigue and frustration are common when you're this close, so hang in there.

As you apply for jobs, keep in mind that employers may not be following up with you simply because you're not yet available full time or haven't achieved your degree. Definitely keep looking at potential companies and do your research. Volunteer or be a temp for awhile if it will help you get a better idea of where you'd like to eventually work.

In the meantime, if you haven't already, maybe you could figure out how much it will cost to live on your own or with a roommate. Look at apartments or shared housing, and estimate other expenses so you will know what you can afford.

You can be very productive in this stage as you plan for your future. Finish strong and you'll be glad you did.
