Depression-living in the past. Is this a real condition?

I suffer from anxiety, panic, OCD and depression. I take generic Serzone 3x per day and it's about the only med that has worked.

For many years I have been suffering from some sort of melancholy/bittersweet/living in the past depression. All I ever think about are the "good old days" like when I was a child or when I was with my ex husband. I think of my grandmother who is gone. I love to ride through my old neighborhood, etc., but then I am so sad afterwards.

Is there a name for this? Does anyone else have it?

Also, I have had nearly the same dream for many years and I know it means something too.

I wish I had an answer for you. My depression is recurrent from mistakes from the past and being unable to forgive myself. Just the opposit spectrum.

Unfortunately I am the same as Randy. I have problems dealing with past events. Although if it works one way round, I dont see why it shouldnt work the other way around. Im sure I have heard of people living in the past before but it is a very dim and distant memory which probably means I saw it once on the TV about 5 years ago! Your doctor may be able to tell you more. Im sorry I can't help any more than that.

I tend to live in the past at times,and have to really work hard to bring myself back to reality.

I have alot of nightmares,and it takes me a good hour after I wake up to realize that I am safe and my life is happy.

I think I always go back to the past because that is what has caused my depression,and I am trying to deal with it.
I wish there was a magic pill that could just make me forget about it,or a time capsule that I could travel back and make it all better.

It sounds like you have alot of good memories from the past and be thankful for that.

Hi Greyhound,

I was interested in your post as you said you take serzone. I used to take serzone 550mg but my Dr. took me off of it as some peole on it were having liver failure.  I didn't know there was a generic but then I went off it 4 yrs ago.  Do you think it is helping you?  I thought it helped me a lot and was bummed when I had to switch but am doing OK on current meds.  Still have many days when I am very down.  Would really appreciate hearing from you about the serzone.

I have problems with the past and it really adds to my depression. Hell, maybe it's the cause -- my inability to move forward and never look back. Other people find it so easy. When I think about the past, I think about moments I'll never have again, people I'll never see, and mistakes I can never correct. Not a good thing to dwell on this.

I do the same Cyborg. I have times where I shudder at the mistakes that I have made..or just start reliving in my mind the bad things that have happened to me.
I do not know how to turn it off. I wish there was a magical pill that we could take to make all the bad memories go away.

I have that same feeling daily. I dont know if I am being a revisionist or if the past really was so much better. I stay up night after night replaying old movies in my head- good moments I want again, and bad ones I wish never happened. This is human I bet, but its so easy for me to dwell on it because I'm depressed. Maybe if I thought the future would be better, I could focus on it... but I still feel so negative about what tomorrow will bring. I do really think it is natural to always think back to a time when you were "happy." Maybe it will help us not to repeat those "mistakes" in the future.

This would be a good question to ask the members on a new thread. This thread is from 2007. Feel free to start a new thread and ask this question and introduce yourself.

I find that mindfulness helps with this so much. I try not to dwell on the past but rather stay in the present.

Anyhow, welcome to the forum.

Hello Everyone, it seems that most of you are having problems based on your revisitation of the past in one way or the other. You can only control the moment in which you find yourself. The past is a done deal, like it or not....you can not change it by wishing it was different. The future can be fashioned to some extent, but only if you learn from your past mistakes and use the present moment to construct the infrastructure you hope to build on. The future can be just a replay of the past if you are not careful, and use those lessons that have beaten you down, but strengthened you by surviving. Once, I was riding to work in my truck, contemplating all my disappointment and generally feeling very sorry for myself. I prayed to God, "Please tell me what is takes for a man to be happy in this life, Lord." Across the black velvet screen of my consciousness scrolled this message, "Live in the moment". I have never forgotten just how strong and poignant that response was. I have no doubt, it was from Heaven's heart and I have tried to follow that sage advice ever since. I would say to all of you.....remember the words of the Serenity Prayer....have the courage to change those things that you can change, the serenity to accept those things that you cannot, and the wisdom to know the difference." Forgive yourself for past mistakes and their consequences, and forge ahead to make a worthy future for yourself and those you love.
