Did I make the right med decision?

I guess that really is a rhetorical question.  I just got back on meds (zoloft specifically) because my doctor and I both felt that I was relapsing.  There is no question there.  My doctor started talking to me about cymbalta and told me that I may want to seriously try it because it actually is a double med in which it is an anti-d and also a medication to help with the joint pains that lately have been really bothering me.  I told the doctor that I really didn't want to try anything new given my bad experiences with so many anti-d's, that zoloft has worked for me in the past and besides having to go on a high dose that I didn't have any complaints.  He told me that the choice was 100% mine and he wrote an rx for zoloft.

 

I am now really dwelling on this now.  I'm thinking that maybe I should have been more open to the fact that another med could do what I need and maybe more (see I wasn't totally honest with my doctor, zoloft has really helped me a lot and has really taken the edge off of my anxiety and depression but not completely... I just didn't want to deal with unknown side effects of a new med).  What if I am holding myself back from getting the help I need?  Has anyone else been in this predicament?

Are you taking 50mgs or 100 mgs? I'm taking 50 mgs of Zoloft and the doctor wants me to increase it too 100mgs. I'm a little afraid to,but I understand thats what a lot of doctors do. Guess I'll give it a try. I can always go back to 50mgs.
I agree that maybe when you start feeling better it would be easier to change meds. Lots of luck. Dee

I was on Zoloft for eight years.
I was told I'd have to take it
for life. Depression was pretty
much my best friend.
That was three years ago since
I quit the zoloft. My decision, not my dr.
I guess I just got fed up. I
After giving up caffeine and
diet sodas, taking a mineral
supplement with magnesium
and B12 (1,000 mg daily)
I have no depression
and no more zoloft. I was taking
the highest dosage of the drug.
My doctor was upset that I quit
taking it but stopped commenting
on it after a few months because
I have had no further need from it.
When I took Zoloft, I never
ever felt like myself. I knew my body
was trying to tell me something
and that now, looking back
I probably had severe mineral
deficiencies, all that pop
all that phoshous washing away
my calcium and minerals.
No wonder I was depressed.

I very much symphathize with your
situation. Believe me, I do.
As I said, I took this med for
eight years.

I find it odd, that not once,
did my dr ever question my diet
or anything else. I just said "I'm depressed"
and was given the script. It was downhill
from there (for me) I realize not everyone
experiences this but I wish to God, I had
never taken it. I still worry about the side effects
that could be lurking!

Just wanted to let you konw I am thinking of you. It can be difficult to handle all life brings our way. Goo luck and I hope you get relief soon.

Hi Des. I totally understand your reluctance to change medication as I'm also like that. I take Celexa on and off and even though it also has side effects, I know what to expect so feel more secure if that makes any sense.

I looked up both meds on the Mayo web site and this is what it says. Zoloft is used to treat depression, OCD, panic attacks, etc. and Cymbalta is used to treat mental depression and nerve pain caused by diabetes?
