Getting Ready to Start Counseling

I was supposed to start counseling last week but there was a snow storm and I was on call at the hospital so I didn't go.  My next appointment isn't until the 28th so I called my therapist to see if I can get a sooner one.  And she has a "concern" about seeing me because she knows my mother.  The problem is, my mother knows all the therapists.  She said she didn't want it to be a problem with me.  Now I feel like she just doesn't want to be my therapist and i'm ready to give up on the whole idea.  She made me feel like I wasn't wanted.  I dunno...I know it's just me...but now i'm completely upset.  I told her it wouldn't be a problem...but if she doesn't want me there what's the point in going?  AAAAAHHHHHH.....I don't even want to leave the house now.  I dunno why I do this to myself.

Go to your appointment and ask what the problem really is--while looking him or her in the eye.

Odds are that the only thing the counselor meant was that you might prefer going to someone who only knew you--and YOU will have to deal with that. It's also possible that the counselor has preconceived ideas or knowledge about you based on knowing your mother--and the COUNSELOR will have to deal with that. Either of those are just something to deal with. The other reason is a bit more fun: the counselor might also think like so many do and not want to tell you, that the parent not the child should be in counseling.

Deciding to go was a good choice, but carrying through is a scary thing. Don't let this or other cold-feet excuses stop you.

Some states the law allows the counselor to talk to the mother of someone under 18, but even in them most counselors won't without clients permission.

Because the counselor said, "She said she didn't want it to be a problem with me," I think the counselor was just expressing concern that hposi03 might be or become worried that the counselor would talk to her mother.

But like I said above that is just something to be dealt with.

Everyone just forget I came on here.  I should have never complained about it on here.  It was stupid and i'm a baby.  The counselor doesn't really KNOW my mom...they used to work in the same building.  f;kljsaf;lks fsalfj n;sdafj  This has just been a rough day.  I shouldn't have complained about it.

"Complaining" among people with the similar issues is good. It's good for you and for others.

Am I missing something? Was there more information? Was something else going on?
