I started Effexor today and I'm really scared. I've been reading some bad stuff about side effects and withdrawls and it's making me panic. I don't know if I'm on the right drug, my general practitioner prescribed it, not a psychologist.

Is there any information out there comparing the different drugs? How can I find out more about the one I'm on now. I keep reading on different sites that it has made people suicidal and withdrawl is an issue with this drug. Does anyone know about this or can point me to some resources?

One main reason that children and teenagers have problems is that during these young years, their brain is actually going through natural chemical changes.  Anytime you use a drug to alter brain chemical function there is going to be some sort of reaction.  My nephew has a form of ADHD and has been on several different meds and levels since he, too, had suicidal thoughts.  Currently under control, keeping our fingers crossed.  Let me know if this helps.

Thank you. Do you know of any sources that I can get advice on medication and if what I'm feeling is normal? I'm not sure I want to continue this.

Pixie, the site I gave you for WebMD can give you information on different drugs used for Depression but the best resource is a Psychiatrist.  A good pharmacist can also provide some help.  A GP has some basic knowledge but you really need to get help from someone who really deals with this sort of thing.

Thanks Migrunt. I think medication is not for me. I read the WebMD sites that you posted and it was helpful, so thank you for that. My social worker isn't helping me and I'm going to try a cognitive behavioral therapist and to do this without medication.

It is important to remember that there are side effects to any medication not just antidepressants.  If your physician puts you on an antidepressant he does not do it lightly.  There is a certain criteria that has to be followed according to the DSM IV even if he is just a general practitioner.  I suggest before you go off the medication you call your physician and notify him of how you are feeling if indeed you are feeling bad or are reacting to something you have read on the internet........?  When starting a new medication it is important to stay positive and Effexor will may you feel jittery and nervous feeling at first....
