how do you know if you are depressed? when do you know that you need to see a professional? and how do you get diagnosed with depression? isn't everybody somewhat depressed at some level? I've never seen a doctor about my mental health and still considering and debating if I do really need to see one. and i wouldn't know what kind of professional ito seek. any advise?

yea see your usuall dr and explain what you are feeling they will be able to tell you if what u have is real depression or just a low spell, lorraine

HI,

Tell us more about yourself and what caused you to beleave you need mental health,
some people show signs of deppresion when someone close dies, or other bad situations then its considard temporary deppresion but some people may develop clinical deppresion symtoms.
it's important to see the doctor and tell him everything.be honest.

some of the symptums I read about:
a) lack or too much sleep
b) less desire to do activities you used to do , because of your mood
c) you cry when your alone
d) feelings of dispare
e) if someone one interupt you while your buesy with something you would scream at them.

that was just some of the causes. good luck and i hope you get better soon

Hi luvdee, You have gotten some very good suggestions and advice so far.  The only thing that I would add is that now a days if you want to quickly find out you can go online and Google "depression questionnaire" and pick one from a list of hundreds.  There are many drug companies who make antidepressants who are now posting these online to make it easier for people with depression to get help.  So, you can take the depression test print it out and take it with you to the doctors.  Some Primacy Care Physicians are not current on antidepressants, and the different types of mental disorders.  They can prescribe an antidepressant, and refer you to a therapist or psychiatrist who is really the type of physician who should be assessing you for depression and prescribing medications.  Good luck...

All of you have been so kind to me and I'm so greatful for all your concerns. It's so nice to know that even though we are all strangers here, you are all willing to help someone and anyone in need. And your help IS so helpful. Ive gotten clarity and hope on my situation thanks to you all. It was comforting just to know that someone listened and cared. Thank you again. I've made a decision to get some professional help.

I am glad that your seeking help, that is a big step to take and very courageous.  HW has some of the most supportive and caring people on it that is for sure.  Keep posting it does help greatly to know that others are going through the same thing and understand, and also to be able to help someone else in need.  Take care

You asked an important and interesting question. I am prone to depression and it took me 10 years to recognise it. I have a friend who has ongoing post-partum depression (almost a year now) and she doesn't even know it.

After you go to the Dr, check in with us. We'd love to know how things are going for you.

Its is so encouraging to hear that you are seeking medical help. It can take a long time with depression to realise that you actually need help so its great that you can see that you do. Keep in touch and let us know how you get on.
