Do anti-depressants really work?

I always hear people say how it makes them feel "numb." Numb sounds kind of, well, depressing to me. And I can't really fathom what that feels like, or if it would be different from how I feel now. How do you know it's not just a placebo effect? What are the most effective anti-depressants?

Worked like a charm! Everyone is different and we can not say which meds are the most effective because what may be effective for me may not be effective for you. You have to work this out with your pdoc. I can tell you that meds never, ever made me feel numb. I felt numb when dealing with depression. Meds helped me put things back together and get my feel under me again.

Cyborg, I've never experienced feeling numb taking an antidepressant or anxiety medication. they have saved my life and made my life so much easier to handle, and more enjoyable. I've taken them 15 yrs. so I wouldnt want to do without them. All medications work differently with different people, so I would seek a professional that can help put you on the right med. for you. I wish you luck!

I have never felt numb taking an antidepressant. All they have done is hep me

People do react differently to medications but a lot of the time it can be the depression that makes you feel numb.

Maybe you should talk with your doctor.  There are many different ones and each one is different.  I have not felt numb just a lot better.

Talk to your dr. and find out what meds. work for you. Thanks to the combo. of paxil and xanax, I have been able to function again, and started working again. Living with depression is like living under a blanket of fog, tears, destructive thoughts and loneliness. Give meds. a try.

i too hav felt numb on being on some the AD....i am now quiting zoloflt b/c it  made me sleep too much at 50 mgs and i was sleeping 18 hours a day

yeah they work but you just have to hang in there until they kick in . all of us knows it is very hard but it will be worth it in the end . good luck tongue

plus it is also about finding the right medication for you as well . what works for you may not work for me . just be patience with your doctor and he will find that magic pill for you in time . good luck again
