Celexa and Wellbutrin Advice needed

I have been on 40 mg of Celexa for a few years now and find that it pretty much works for me but a few months ago I tried to swithc to Wellbutrin to help me quit smoking and because the weight gain with the Celexa was starting to get to me. I had a terrible time and was miserable for the 3 weeks I was on Wellbutrin. I weaned off the Celexa for only about a week and a half before starting the Wellbutirn which were Drs orders. I was MISERABLE but was unsure if it was withdrawls from the Celexa or the Wellbutrin. I had taken Wellbutrin a ffew years ago in addition to Paxila dn never had a problem with it. Anyway my Dr is wanting me to try the Wellbutrin again. I am really scared because the few weeks I was on it in July were the worst I can remember. She has told me to take my 40mg of Celexa every other day for a week and then go to 20mgs every other day for a week but in the meantime go ahead and start the Wellbutrin. Does anyone have any experience switching from one to the other or any advice? Do you think I should wean from the Celexa longer?

Hi jbs, welcome to healing well forum, we are happy to have you join us here.  I fully understand antidepressant side effects when going off of them...they are most terrible.  What it sounds like is the first time you only weaned off the Celexa for a week and half before starting the Wellbutrin.  Your side effects from that is going to depend on how long you were on Celexa and what dosage you were taking at the time you started to wean off.  Also, what dosage of Wellbutrin they started you on may of not been enough to counteract the side effects of the Celexa.

Now your doing it again but weaning off slower and taking the Wellbutrin on top to the Celexa which is safe to do.  It sounds like your doc is trying to help keep you from getting those terrible side effects and hopefully by already having the Wellbutrin in your system for a week or so it will help.  You can see how you feel by the end of those two weeks and if you feel you need to wean longer then do so but you want to keep cutting your dosage down.

Thank you so much for your help and insight. i am really hoping this will work for me this time. I have been on the Celexa for several years. I was off for a year a few years back and it took me at least a montha dn a half to feel ok again. Also when I was pregnant at the very beginning my Regualr Dr took me straight off the Celexa until I could get in with my OB who put me back on them, thank goodness.
I am so glad I found this place and am looking forward to getting to know the people on here.

I take Celexa in the morning and Remeron at night. Many people take more than one at a time. Last time I weaned from one drug to the next I think we did it over a months time. I hope the slower weaning helps you.
